I'll never forget the appalling sound of a pig being killed by the folk in the house behind ours when I was a kid. I didn't know what the dreadful noise was till my father told me. The poor pig..... They'd raised it ready for Christmas, Dad said.....

I thought of that but it inevitably seemed too obvious, so I found myself thinking up all sorts of weird answers like 'you enter the race running the wrong way' or 'you start way late in the race' and.....
