Last Shabbat I woke up at 4am. Very unusual for me, but I was wide awake and knew I wouldnt be able to go back to sleep. So I went out on my back porch with a cup of coffee. I live in a trailer park just outside of town. It was still dark and I closed my eyes and listened to the wind blow thru the huge pine tree next door. It sounded like I was in a forest. I smelled the Russian Olives in bloom. They have the most wonderful cinnamon scent. I heard a rooster crow and a lamb cry. Then some horses were playing near by. As I watched a beautiful sunrise and felt the warmth on my face I had such joy in my heart.
I wonder how much we would be affected by the sights, smells and sounds of the Temple. I wonder how much our understanding of Scripture would be enhanced. As much joy as I have for the approaching fall festivals, it is diminished because I cant experience that.
Tisha BAv is July 27th
