Six Pack (1982)

Kenny Rogers' first big screen appearance and his only starring one ever (though he has starred in several made-for-TV westerns.) I used to love this as a kid. Haven't seen it in ages so I gave it a go. Co-stars a young Diane Lane and Anthony Michael Hall (pre-John Hughes.) Decent, kinda family film. Some minor swearing but it's a good story.

Popeye (1980)

Another movie that I haven't seen since I was a kid. Very strange film. The cartoon comes to life but stays very, very cartoonish. I was surprised the great Robert Altman directed this. Does not at all seem like his forté. Not sure what to think about Robin Williams here. He was barely getting known from Mork & Mindy when he was cast for this but he seems so perfect for the role. Odd characters made odder by the fact they're not animated. Oh, and today the village where this was filmed (built specically for the movie) is now a tourist attraction in Malta.

Jakob The Liar (1999)

I don't know why this has such bad reviews. People seemingly wanna compare it to Life Is Beautiful. It's not that film, it's a totally different one. Anyway, any time people have an opportunity to see films like this, they should, methinks. We become better people when we see what life was like in a ghetto in Poland in WWII. It's not bright and cheery but it's important. Robin Williams does a good job giving the gray, death-filled, Nazi-ruled vacuum some life.

I really have few words for this movie. Stunning. A+++++++++++++ infinity.

Holocaust Movies, Day 3 of 3...

La vita è bella (Life Is Beautiful) (1997)

Another wonderful movie. I hate to compare similar films but I was not as movwed by this as I was with The Pianist. Roberto Benigni is simply wonderful here. I will always remember watching the Oscars when he won and how excited he was. A great moment! While I love this film so much, it really doesn't have the tremendous weight that other holocaust films do. Of course that's because this throws into the mix a lot of humor. An interesting mix you wouldn't expect from such a dark, terrible time in history.

Recommended!!!!!! Do watch the Italian version with subtitles!!! NOW!!!!!

Soul Surfer! Excellent movie. I'd recommend it for the family, but beware of blood and bikinies (and bikini jokes).
