Phonology-the sound system of a language and the rules that govern the sound combinations. For example, this area includes the rule system regarding how certain sounds are produced (e.g., velars, which are produced with back of the tongue elevated), rules which govern where the sound can be located within a word (e.g., there are no words in the English language that begin with ng)
