  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What lang. do you work in?
Perl and C. I'm a computer science major at University of Alabama, Huntsville. My husband (a computer engineer) and I have a web development business on the side at http://www.fuzzymonkey.org, where we do custom programming and web design work and provide free web scripts.

I use my laptop and a kvm to make use of my desktop monitor.
Spreading programs and output/forms across two monitors comes
in real handy. LapTop overheating is not a problem if you will keep
the vent opening clear and periodically disassemble and clean the
fan and heat sink. Just be sure if there is thermal putty between
the sink and cpu, to ball the putty up under the foil so it spreads
evenly between the sink and cpu when you reseat it.

I was thinking what I think would be an ideal programmer's laptop.
That prompted a websearch and brought me to this topic and forum.
Anyways, my ideal laptop would have 3 displays that unfolde side by
side and a standard keyboard that did the same. There would also
be a slide out mouse table for a standard size mouse. This would make
it thicker and heavier that normal laptops, but programmers do not
typically carry their laptops around alot like other business professionals
who are on the move all day; usually just from home to work.

Desktop comfort, wide display spanned across 3 panels and laptop
portablity... *Pauses to daydream a bit* hmmm kind of alongshot,
but :prayer:

I just bought myself a Gateway 200X, and despite that other thread that I posted, I went with the Gateway, as they managed to get it shipped on the same day they said it would be delayed. I'd much rather use my desktop whenever it permits for doing any sort of coding/image editing because I use a dual monitor setup on it. However, if you do get a laptop, use it in combination with the desktop for increased speed. I tend to have a browser window open looking up functions and the code window open on the other monitor. Even if all you can do is get a really old 15" or less secondary monitor and a cruddy second video card (I did that for awhile) you should really try a dual monitor setup. People always wander into my dorm (I'm serious about that, random people wander in all the time) and boggle over why I have two computers.
