  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

To Eggs:

ANY relationship with God, be it layperson or priest, must be worked at. Look at marriage for an example. You don't get married one day, and then live "happily ever after."

(pause while I laugh out loud)

We all go through cycles in our faith. There are times when we draw so close to God, and crave to be even closer. Then the fires burn brightly and die down to embers. You have to FEED those embers to keep the fire alive. A priest has to feed his embers, too. And remember, because of their chosen profession, priests make a lovely target for Satan. To pull someone away from his duty to God makes that a tasty morsel!

ANY type of serving occupation has risks of burnout. People expect the priest to be oncall, 24 hours a day. Simple fatigue can numb both the brain and the heart.

The Church where I attend noon Mass during the week always asks for prayers for our Pope, our Bishop, and all the priests. I can certainly see why.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

Why are there so many Catholic Priests/nuns/sunday school teachers that teach things that aren't "Official" Catholic teachings?

Because they are all just people. Some teach better than others. Some may try to 'rephrase' things thinking that will make it easier or more palatable, while they are actually accomplishing the opposite. The solution is always simple: Do your own homework. :)

yeah, but how can someone become a priest and not know? and why are they a priest if they dont' believe?

Perhaps they believe their own version of Catholicism is more authoritative than the one taught (protestantism in disguise?) but they grew up in a Catholic church so that's what they chose to stay in. Or perhaps they consider their own differences in doctrine unimportant; I don't know

There are a lot of liberal Catholics in general who don't believe a lot of what the church teaches but still go to Mass every week. My mother did this for 5 years (she claims she left in outrage over a statement the Pope made about women not imaging Christ -- I keep meaning to look for the specifics on this statement, but I forget). Despite the neat idea that Catholicism is so cut-and-dried and has definite beliefs that everyone follows, the truth is that there are a lot of people calling themselves "Catholic" who do not hold a lot of those beliefs. Whether or not they are "catholic" is up to each individual to decide, but not all Catholics believe the same (even though they theoretically should).

I, for instance, do not agree with all of the Church teachings. I can't force faith in these things, and I'm not going to lie and say I believe everything -- but I still consider myself Catholic.

It would be interesting to know how many of these teachers, nuns, and priests who taught all of this screwy stuff forty years ago when all of us were school age are still nuns, priests, or practicing Catholic teachers.

I'm willing to bet that good many of them jumped ship once the Sickening Sixties were in full swing, and abandoning the Church was the, like, cool and groovy thing to do, man, can you dig it?

On the other hand, the ones who did stay with the Church---I wonder how many of them were teaching goofy nonsense way back when?

I'd love to see the results of a study done on this sometime. My bet is that the screwy doctrine teachers were bailouts, while the steady orthodox ones were not.

In addition to those who water down the faith, there is also a set of teachers whose zeal causes them to legalize Catholicism, confusing what is good with what is necessary. Many misconceptions about the Church come from a teacher telling them that non-Catholics go to hell, xyz are requirements for heaven, etc.

Faith is killed both by dilution and confinement.

Why are there so many Catholic Priests/nuns/sunday school teachers that teach things that aren't "Official" Catholic teachings

For the same reason that there are many teachers among Protestants who may teach things that are contrary to their beliefs, because they aren't perfect.

My aunt, who has been a nun for 40 some years... used to be terribly bent out of shape because the Church wouldn't ordain women as priests.  She wanted to be one.  She has changed her opinion on the matter (it was probably 30 years ago that she wanted to be a woman priest)--because she understands more fully now what the Church teaches and she accepts it as truth.

That's exactly what I see when I see these things happening. I see "Judas priests" to a certaing extent and others are what's known as "cafeteria catholics" while others just don't understand and haven't felt the need to look deeper. I never understood the teaching on birth control, but I do now, and I agree with it. I can't think of anything the Church teaches that I didn't believe in that reading and praying over hasn't answered.

Thanx, Luv

I wish this were true.

But the lenten study where the priest said the crucifxion was fiction was just about ten years ago. And that priest was promoted and is now working in the Archbishop's office in Cleveland. :sigh:

It's not just Catholics... a Baptist preacher loaned us a video of a preacher's conference he attended...
one of the topics covered was doubt...and the speaker made it a point to say that whether you went to a Bible College or a seminary, there are just not enough qualified Christians to teach all the subjects required to get a degree thus much of the doubt they pick up and later develop is planted by the athristic professors the schools employ that do have the credentials to teach those subjects... ( philosophy, etc...)
