  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of course I would.

Abraham lied (twice) and Isaac lied about their wives being their sisters (to protect their lives)...and when they were sent away, they were REWARDED, and they became great, in partial fulfillment of the Abrahamic Promise.

There are numerous other examples that could be brought to bear.

The ninth commandment doesn't tell us not to lie. It prohibits us from BEARING FALSE WITNESS (testimony) against another person.

Completely different ball of wax.

Proverbs talks a lot about the lying tongue, but when you do a study getting into the specifics of what is meant, invariably you will find that the context refers to lying as a means of harming or injuring another (physically, or their reputations), or rebelling against an authority figure.

There may be other contexts...but those should be determined situationally and with practical wisdom. The Bible, in many ways, is not a manual. It's a wisdom guide that needs to be applied in accordance with the two great commandments.

It depends on the specifics of the situation. In this case, what would be the repurcussions if my lie was caught?

You die. If you're lucky, you don't die in vain and the kid makes it another day.

I would lie. Desperate situation call for desperate measures, in this case, lying for morality. But 99% of the time, lying for morality is just lying, period.

"Evil triumps when good men do nothing."
If the question were, would you lie to save the lives of a Jewish family, or to save the lives of two Jewish children, then I would say yes, I'd lie.
I just think it is pointless for me to risk death to save one person, when I could live and save the lives of many or die to save the lives of many.
What good is a dead freedom fighter?

I'd lie in this case without hesitation. I do it in day to day life about really minor things (telling people that whatever they're wearing suits them, etc.) so why wouldn't I when it is so clearly the right thing to do?

A good freedom fighter fights tyranny at every stop. He doesn't choose which tyrant he will fight, or on what occasions to fight. Wherever tyranny is, that's where the fight is.

Doesn't anyone see that this thread is a reaction to the "lying for morality" thread? Most people there rejected the idea of lying for a moral cause. Congrats, you've given lynn18 a chance to gloat at your hypocrisy.

You obviously didn't read my responce.

Imagine it is the 1940s and we are in Nazi Germany. Would I lie to a Nazi to save the life of a Jewish child? My answer is yes i would lie.You make up your own minds. is it a sin to lie to save the life of a child?
The question exposes the greatest problem with supposed moral/ethical absolutes: They pretend that a given situation can be reduced to one aspect, whilst in real life it always comes down to weighing up multiple ethical/moral aspects against each other.
I don´t see lieing as a problem in itself. Even if I did I would consider it marginal in this particular case, compared to the issue of helping others to kill someone.

Just about everyone is willing to lie or do something more for what they perceive to be a moral cause of utmost importance. Some of these supposed moral causes are derived from irrational superstition, however.

For example, the suicide bomber perceives what he's doing as a moral cause. Furthermore, so does the woman who drowns her kids because god apparently told her too, the person who bombs abortion clinics, the person who deliberatly lies about evolution, the person that lies about sex and its consequences, and the person who kills gays.

People who lie or do something more for such causes aren't doing anyone a favor, imo.

I agree.

Not a problem. I would lie in a heart beat to save the kid - dont matter what religion/race. Is it a sin? I could care less if it is.
