Knitting Problem

I wonder if anyone can advise me please? I am knitting a baby blanket in 4 ply wool on 31/4 mm needles as per the pattern instructions. The thing is that the pattern says that the blanket should measure 351/2 inches square, but my blanket only measures barely 30 inches across. I am not sure what I have done wrong. I am knitting a sort of basket weave pattern (that is the best way I can describe it) and it is a 22 row pattern repeat. I am not sure if I should be using larger needles. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi It is possible that your tension is too tight - you may be knitting too tightly - most knitting patterns do recommend knitting a smalll sample of the pattern first to check that you will be knitting to the correct tension, but I have to admit that I have never taken that advice myself If you were to knit a sample though, and found as I suspect that your tension was tighter, the instructions would normally recommend that you use larger needles. Hope this helps - maybe someone else may have other ideas?

I would give this same advice. Usually, they give you a gauge at the beginning of the pattern, like 6 sts per cm and you may have to use bigger needles to achieve that. I also knit tightly, so I often find that I move up a needle size when I am starting out. It's done so that you can get the same results as the pattern all the way through.

I love basket weave on baby blankets, it's so cozy and giving. A wool with a soft hand will give the baby warmth and wick away moisture if it needs to.

I would give the same advise as well. I tend to knit loosly so I will use smaller kneedles than called for.
