I had a Kobo and gave it up after reading 10 or so books, that was years ago, now I'm ready to try again. Is there a whitepaper style ereader that works well with Google Books and other competitors to Kindle? Should I just break down and buy a Kindle? Does the Kindle Fire have a whitepaper appearance? I'm trying to avoid reading from a traditional tablet screen.

Yours in the Lord,

I left behind the Kindle device and just use my iPad with Kindle reader App.

This is the white paper setting on the Kindle iPad app:

You also choose fonts and text size. The app downloads my books from the Kindle Cloud. Pretty handy. For years I was going back and forth from devices until Apple finally did some good work on the Kindle reader app.

A 12.9” IPad Pro, along with the reading app, is the only tablet you need.

The Kindle Fire does *not* have a whitepaper appearance. It's useful if you want a relatively inexpensive tablet for tablet-ly things, but otherwise, a Kindle app on ANY tablet or phone works just as well.

If you want a dedicated Kindle reader with the e-ink technology that imitates the look of paper and does not have the glare when using outside like a typical tablet or phone, the Kindle Paperwhite is a very good option.

For Google books and other sources, most of them use the epub format I believe, so if they don't offer a mobi, prc, or azw Kindle formats, you can usually run the epub through a program that will convert them to Kindle so you can read them on your Kindle (or in your Kindle app).

Try what you want to do on the Kindle app first by installing on a phone or tablet you currently have, and if it does, then consider if you want to buy a dedicated Kindle device.
