  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I have my own pathetic tale. Many years ago, my then girlfriend and I were living in separate rooms of a nurses quarters. And I have a morbid fear of cockroaches! And I mean morbid.

So, one early morning about 3:00AM, I am disturbed by one rattling around in the metal venetian blinds. I panic and I knock on my girlfriend's door and ask her to get rid of the bug.

She comes out half asleep and enters my room whilst I wait outside. She comes back out and says "it's gone". Whew! I can sleep again.

Well, I married that same girl. And years later she told me a postscript to this tale. She said that she went into my room and rattled around and made a bit of noise-making no attempt to kill and remove this cockroach! She then just came out and said "it's gone". I nearly cried tears when I think of myself going back to sleep with a disgusting cockroach in my room. She just laughed and laughed and said, "darling, cockroaches can't hurt you".

So I've had my revenge many a time since then when I've left leaving a spider behind in the room. Particulary the larger huntsman spider which terrifies her but doesn't bother me at all.

So darling wife, if you read this, let me just say one thing-"karma".

Curiousity got to me...had to see what this huntsman spider looks like..

and here it is....

I can only imagine how funny it would be to have any of you in my snake room which currently houses 59 of my slithery children.
Snakes don't bother me in the least. Obviously, working in the Australian bush as I do at times, it is important to respect snakes, I mean, this guy

the King Brown, could ruin your whole weekend. But he's just an animal, interested in minding his own snaky business. He's not the incarnation of satanic, alien evil that is the creeping, venomous viciousness that is the araneae

I have a particular fondness for Australian Python species especially the Woma and Blackheaded Pythons, Jungle Carpet Pythons, Pygmy Pythons and Diamond Pythons.

The Elapids such as the King Brown, Death Adder and Inland Taipan are awe inspiring but deserving of much respect and a wide berth.

I'd love to watch you have a few camel spider encounters. ^_^

In all honestly, if I encountered one of those in my home I'd pack my bags and not come back. In fact, I probably wouldn't even pack.

Also, now you have spider guts all over your OED.

Yes, probably best to use a book that wont be used, like the bible for instance.

I simply can't believe this happened

Yes, the story was partly fictional. I can't harm or take part in the harming of any innocent creatures.

Australian huntsman spiders are far scarrier than camel spiders. To me anyway. Largely on account of the fact that I have to share a continent with them.

And no, King Brown snakes don't eat spiders, they were the peak predator in parts of Australia for quite a while, pretty much until foxes and dogs arived.

When I did my recruit course, I was told the sure fire way to tell the difference between a brown snake and a king brown snake... "when it bites you, if it takes you seven minutes to die, its a king brown snake, but if it takes half an hour for you to die, don't worry, its only a brown snake".

Diamond and carpet pythons actually make good pets, by all accounts. You need a licence to keep reptiles as pets here, but they aren't that hard to get, if you're serious about it, and I've known quite a few people who are very happy to have a live, loose diamond or carpet python loose in their roof space, apparently they are better mousers and ratters than cats or terriers.

I have a firm hatred and respect for snakes, FE Warren has a massive snake problem, and they had a special perimeter fence for them where they could crawl halfway through and then get stuck, unable to go forward or back. Many a memory of an Airman trying to chop ones head off with a shovel while staying out of biting distance. Usually they were rattlers.

This morning I was preparing to feed the cats when a spider seemed to appear out of nowhere on the kitchen counter. I went to get my bug-catchin'-cup and came back to find the spider was drinking from a drop of water on the countertop. It was fascinating to watch. I waited until it was finished and, with all of you in mind, I caught the spider and released it outdoors. :)

Good morning, everybody!
