  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm going to put together a FAQ, and Tips for people here that use windows there are a few things that people can do to keep people from getting into your computers. It will be for windows xp. I might do a FAQ for FreeBSD, and Linux, but I haven't decided yet. Anyone else that has tips please post them. :)

BTW this would mostly be for people that have DSL or Cable modem or something similar, but it will work on dailup.

If you have questions please ask them.

Disabling NetBIOS, and file sharing (If you have this enabled people might be able to get into your computer.

1. Right click on My Network Places then go to properties.

2. Now you will be in Network Connection folder.

3. If you have a Cable modem, and some DSL modems you will have a Local Area connection (LAN). Just right click on that, and go to properties. You will now have a few boxes uncheck the one that says File Sharing, and click the uninstall button. Then click ok button until everything is closed. That should remove File Sharing from your computer.

4. If you have dialup or PPPoE, or PPPoA or similar. Right click on your dialup, or DSL connection, and go to properties. Now there should be a network tab, and in the tab there will be a few options, one will be something like File, and Printer Sharing. Uncheck the box, and click uninstall. Then ok everything and it should be removed.

Disable, and Enable services that can make your computer safer.

The next thing would be to disable some services in your services configuration. If you haven't done this before then you don't have to do it, but if you want to learn you can its pretty easy. I

The best thing to do is go to a site that I love a lot called BlackViper. He made a few pictures that show how to get to the services configuration.

http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/xpprofiles.htm

Once you have got to the services configuration, go to this site it will be a little confusing, but I think that everyone will be able to figure it out.

http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

On that site there will be something that says "Black Viper's Windows XP Home and Professional Services Configurations:” you only want to look at the "SAFE" box, and below the "SAFE" box there will be stuff that says disable, and Manual, and etc... Just disable the things that it says to disable, and nothing else.

It will make your computer boot up faster at least it should. And it will make your computer a little bit safer at the same time.
