Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share a personal story with hopes that it will help others that may be in the same boat.

For those of you who don't know my story, a brief history: I am married and my wife were devout Catholics (well, she was Catholic in name only, but she refuses to convert). About three years ago, I realized that I wanted to be in the Orthodox church, but my wife refused to give consent. After three years of prayer, my wife not only consented, but seemed to take a sincere interest in my new Church. She consented to my conversion and I joined the Church this year.

Fast forward to yesterday: we are moving to a bigger apartment (not a big move...same complex) and I noticed that my wife was really eyeballing this one area, as if she were thinking about what to put there. I went to where she was standing and recommended that we put our family pictures there, but she said "I think this would be a great place for your prayer icons." I was floored! I pointed out that this was the living room and visitors would see them. She indicated that she was okay with this. I told her that my prayer corner should be somewhere quiet, but perhaps I could place some Orthodox pictures there and she agreed! I have prayed for her conversion everyday. I don't think this is a sign of conversion, but a sign that she is serious about supporting me.

So, I just wanted to share this with others that may be in a similar situation. I went through three long years of prayer. My wife was pretty combative during that time; she often got angry when she saw me reading Orthodox literature or using an Orthodox prayer book. And while she didn't threaten divorce, she did point out that I married her as a Catholic and she felt deceived. Now, because of prayer, my wife is very supportive. When I told her that a priest will be visiting Hanoi on December 27, she immediately marked the calendar (she has a habit of agreeing to plans without first asking me).

Anyways, please pray! If you want, I will pray for your spouse too! And, please pray for the conversion of my wife!

Thank you, Myong!

I would be pleased to pray for your wife, and thankful for any prayers for my husband.

It is encouraging that even though she was combative, she is softening. I have heard from my husband as well that he feels deceived, because I married him as a Protestant (he has said "as a Christian" :( ).

May The Lord have mercy on all of us who are in such situations.

Thank you very much for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your story Myong. I am seriously looking at Eastern Orthodoxy - am a little hindered by having no EO Church near where I live. My family, however, husband and two sons, are not practicing Christians of any denomination, although all baptised in the Church of England. I will pray for your wife. I would welcome your prayers for my family. I pray for them every day.

Don't let the lack of nearby EO Churches discourage you.

I moved to Hanoi four years ago. The closest EO Church is in Bangkok. I contacted many Orthodox priests, but I never received a response. Earlier this year, when my wife began to give her consent, a person on another Orthodox forum sent me a Facebook page; they found pictures of a priest celebrating the Divine Liturgy here in Hanoi. I contacted the priest and he told me that this was his first visit and he would return in a few months. When he returned, we discussed what I knew about the Orthodox faith and I was chrismated.

Fervent and sincere prayer will draw us closer to God. Please don't be discouraged by your situation: if you want to be Orthodox, and you sincerely pray for it, I confidently believe God will answer.

Lastly, I highly recommend this book. I just finished and I want to read it again because it will show you the power of prayer happening today in Russia:

Myong, what wonderful news! I will pray for your wife. Please pray for my husband, if possible.

On a personal note, I am really grateful I found this post tonight because I was feeling lonely over my family situation. My husband and his family are unbaptized and practice no religion (we married before my conversion to Christianity). My immediate family is baptized but non-practicing. I am the only Christian. It isn't easy sometimes. I pray everyday for my husband and he has been softening too. In fact, your post reminded me to be grateful for the changes I've seen in him. So thank you for your post. Praying for everyone who is in this situation.

You and your husband will be in my prayers! I converted to the Roman Catholic Church about 7 years ago. Most of my family did not agree with my conversion and I had to stop communicating with some for a while because they were just so offensive.

Constant prayer is key!

Thank you so much!
You are most welcome!

And Sparkle, I will add your family as well when I pray for all of us. (Praying for Zaida's husband and Christina and family as well)
