  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ya, I know, I know! Kazaa has got issues but I really need to download some stuff. I'm looking into getting Kazaa Lite but just a question for the one I already have:
It seems that it's got a trojan horse virus attached to it. Firstly, what is a trojan horse virus and is it really a big problem?

Yes, it's a very big problem. Trojan Horses are similar to viruses except that they don't usually do damage to your computer and they don't spread. A trojan horse is still dangerous, however, because it happily monitors are activities and opens your computer to hackers. It usually turns your computer into basically a zombie computer that spammers and hackers alike can use at their bidding.

Anyway. You can get Kazaa Lite from http://www.oldversion.com/ as I've heard.

I downloaded the latest "Kazaa Lite" version, and I have had so many Ad-Ware problems it's not funny. I have had toolbars magically appearing, search programs running at start up, popups popping up as soon as the desktop loads from startup. I had to go into msconfig and try to figure out what they were called to disable them. I think it was called "Kazaa Lite Plus" or something along those lines.

"Kazaa Lite Plus" has adware/spyware, "Kazaa Lite" doesn't.....they are 2 different programs.

Kazaa is a company and a company requires revenue to survive they manage to get allot of this through what is called spy ware. spy ware is basically a small file that can be designed or not on your computer that basically monitors what web sites you visit, when, where, and what you did there for market information. Spy ware falls under the category of Trojan now a Trojan is not a virus i say this because we cant put every thing under the category of virus because there is several discreet differences. The Trojan that comes with Kazaa opens up a specific port on your computer for the spy ware.

how does it do this? what is a port? how it does this is because you agree to download it when you agree to Kazaas terms and conditions so it doesn’t need to be deceptive or any thing because you gave it permeation to retrieve the file. what is a port? a port is a point of connection on your computer. for instances you could have several thousand ports and many you may never use but you have different ports for when you are using different types of things for instance you have a java port for java related things ext....

On to what i should of explained earlier a virus is a program that executes on your computer a series of programs. That is to say that even Microsoft word could be considered a "virus" because its a program that executes on your computer. ever program falls under that category but doesn’t necessarily carry the same meaning as when some one says "virus" this is why its not illegal to have own a harmful virus program.

Hope this helps you. sorry i went on for a while there kind of do that when talking about computers.

I'd highly suggest 2 free programs to help with your security and minimize your issues with trojan horses.
1 AVG antivirus This is a free AV program that does a better job of detecting viruses than either McAfee or Norton.
2 Sygate Firewall This is a free firewall that will keep your system from being easily penetrated by hackers and keeps most trojan horses from being able to contact the system that sent them.

Another good program is AdAware, but this has to do with spyware. AdAware finds software that tracks your computer and internet usage. Kazaa has spyware in it, not a trojan (typically). If you DL items with trojans, then you might have a trojan, but Kazaa does not have a trojan within itself, usually.

I've never used any version of Kazaa so I don't know what's currently going on with it. However, I suggest you read the EULA very carefully if you do decide to go with it. The original Kazaa EULA essentially gave them (Kazaa) & their third party affiliates the right to do anything & everything they wanted with your processor and bandwidth. Maybe this has been changed by now, but read carefully anyway.

if you got software to remove the spyware in kazaa then you would be breaking the terms of aggrement and kazaa will stop functioning but if you want to just get ad-aware you can aquire it by just going to google and typing in "ad-aware" this is software that will scan the drive you select or folder and find spy ware or ad ware and issolate it. not remove it because by removing it it could cause system problems in cases inwhich system files have been replaced with spy-ware

Thanks everyone. I've got AVG, ad-aware, spybot and Sygate. I disabled the Sygate though cause it wouldn't let anything through. I was the only one who knew how to use it and, since my computer is generally used by the whole family, who happens to be computer illiterate, I decided it was better to disable it.
I would also recommend Fix-It-Utilities 4.0 as a clean up tool. I ran it the other day and I recovered about 500mb of space on my HD.

All you Kazaa Lite users:
Do you also have a problem when you access the Traffic part of the program?
My version works fine and it even downloads but, as soon as I click on the Traffic button to look at my downloads, it says there is some kind of error involving a .dll file and the program shuts down. I'll give you the full error sign if needed.
This is really, really irritating.
Can I just delete Kazaa (the original) and copy my continuing downloads into the shared folder in Kazaa Lite? I don't want to lose those downloads in progress cause they're quite large and it took me quite a while to get that far since I have a slow connection. Does Kazaa Lite rely on the original Kazaa files to run cause I notice it doesn't have it's own set of files. All it has is a .exe file and a "My Shared Folder".

Thanks again!

OK. Really don't want to get into different p2p programs there are out there and which is best. Was stretching it by letting this thread go on as long as it did. Kazaa is one of those applications that we shouldn't promote on these boards and falls under the following forum rules:
