WASHINGTON — Justice Department officials have seized the phones of two top advisers to former President Donald J. Trump and blanketed his aides with about 40 subpoenas in a substantial escalation of the investigation into his efforts to subvert the 2020 election, people familiar with the inquiry said on Monday.

The seizure of the phones, coupled with a widening effort to obtain information from those around Mr. Trump after the 2020 election, represent some of the most aggressive steps the department has taken thus far in its criminal investigation into the actions that led to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

The extent of the investigation has come into focus in recent days, even though it has often been overshadowed by the government’s legal clash with Mr. Trump and his lawyers over a separate inquiry into the handling of presidential records, including highly classified materials, the former president kept at his residence in Florida, Mar-a-Lago.

In related news, it appears that Trump's fund-raising PAC might be in trouble for fraud.

Grand jury probing Trump's post-2020 election fundraising

archive.ph
A federal grand jury has issued subpoenas seeking information about Save America PAC, which was formed as Donald J. Trump promoted baseless assertions about election fraud.
A federal grand jury in Washington is examining the formation of — and spending by — a fund-raising operation created by Donald J. Trump after his loss in the 2020 election as he was soliciting millions of dollars by baselessly asserting that the results had been marred by widespread voting fraud.
According to subpoenas issued by the grand jury, the contents of which were described to The New York Times, the Justice Department is interested in the inner workings of Save America PAC, Mr. Trump’s main fund-raising vehicle after the election. Several similar subpoenas were sent on Wednesday to junior and midlevel aides who worked in the White House and for Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.

Yes, no matter what, always remember that Trump is always the “real victim”, always.
Hey, that's an important actor tweet!

See, here’s the thing, on one side there’s this absolute reluctance to “do anything” about the norms that were bent and possible crimes that may have been perpetuated by President Trump and by those close to him unless there is very good evidence to that effect and the DOJ was confident of getting a conviction.
And we seem to be approaching that point, which is why we’re seeing these subpoenas being handed out.

We only hear what happens in the courts, the deliberations of “if we do this, we will be making history by having the Government charging a former President with crimes that he committed both while he was the incumbent and after he was replaced by a new Chief Executive, we better be sure that we are getting it correct!”, we’re ignorant of, but they’re happening.

"people familiar with the inquiry said on Monday." Again who are those people? Frankly I am tired of the MSM creating false news and innuendo by using unverified sources, the public deserves real news and real facts that have been verified.

I know you're constantly told he committed all of these crimes, and are exposed to constant name-calling and smear tactics. And the final Democrat play just before elections is that Republicans are trying to take away Social Security and Medicare. Of all of the investigations and attempt to frame Trump, the best they can come up with is papers. Trump's attorneys were in negotiations and Trump had papers, so as in all good fabrications there is a grain of truth. Let an independent party decide whether there is evidence Trump was selling nuclear secrets to foreign nations and committing espionage. It's not about papers, it's about distracting from the fentanyl, sex trafficking, crime out of control, the attack on fossil fuels which will send utility bills sky high, Afghanistan, paying off rich kids student loans, on and on.

Exactly. So if any of the information is true, and it is being leaked, by now Garland should have gone before the American people and said although he wants to convict Trump that he will not stand for leaks of such classified information and he has launched an investigation to find and prosecute the source. That is his responsibility under his oath of office, but it's not happening.

In a totally unrelated story, President Trump heads to the links to not play golf.
In a totally unrelated story, nobody on Ghlislane Maxwell's list of pedophiles have been prosecuted.

If you're expecting the DOJ to provide an official press release, that isn't how investigations operate. We'll know soon enough when the alleged targets of these subpoenas are forced to respond.

Federal agents with court-authorized search warrants took phones last week from at least two people: Boris Epshteyn, an in-house counsel who helps coordinate Mr. Trump’s legal efforts, and Mike Roman, a campaign strategist who was the director of Election Day operations for the Trump campaign in 2020, people familiar with the investigation said.

Publishing a staged photo of the inside of Trump's residence with documents made to look like they are strewn over the floor is not supposed to be "how investigation operate." This double standard is going to end. Every citizen deserves the same due process no matter what their political leanings. I know how it is.

.

It was quite obvious the documents were placed for the photo to demonstrate there were classified documents...but whatever....keep repeating Trump's grievances...

Maybe you should ask "Tucker". He seemed to have a list of specific people.

In this case "people familiar with the inquiry" seem to be the people who got subpoenas. They would certainly be "people" and were "familiar" with their part of the "inquiry".

Notice how the sourcing isn't "according to anonymous DOJ officials"?

The first question you should ask about sourcing from criminal investigations is: "do the targets, defendants, or witnesses have the sourced information?"

The second question is "Does the source attribution make sense if those sources are defense team/targets/witness?" If so they probably were, even if the choice seems poorly made.

The "MSM" versions have a few names and a number of subpoenas numbering a couple dozen. "Tucker" has a couple dozen names. Gee, could it be that those who got subpoenas want to claim the mantle of harassment, etc.? (True or not.)

Those people are usually the lawyers of those served the subpoenas. Like this one: "Another was Bernard B. Kerik, a former New York City police commissioner. Mr. Kerik, who promoted claims of voter fraud alongside his friend Rudolph W. Giuliani, was issued a subpoena by prosecutors with the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, his lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, said on Monday. Mr. Parlatore said his client had initially offered to grant an interview voluntarily."
