  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just converted from Islam.

Hi there. I posted on another thread and when I found this one, I figured this is where I should introduce myself. I just became saved one week ago and am so happy that I did. I was born in Turkey and traveled alot and have always had an interest to who Jesus was and why Islam only believed that he was a prophet. I am really looking forward to making friends on this site and learning more about being a Christian and deepening my relationship with Christ! :)
I could be wrong but they wanted to magnify Mohommed and minimize Jesus.

Thanks so much you guys!! I just came back from an amazing trip in Turkey. I am having an issue about something. My fiancee is Catholic and with my finding Jesus in my life it has prompted me to ask him alot of questions. I am attending a Baptist Church and people are telling me not to marry an "unequally yoked person" Mark told me that he has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and told me that he loves God and goes by what the bible says. He attends church with me sometimes. He said that Catholics and Christians believe in the same principles but that they do certain things differently. We agreed on raising our kids as Christians and have a firm foundation on moral and ethics. We also have a wonderful relationship built on trust, love, and respect. In fact, these past four months since accepting Christ, it has brought us so much closer together. I know that Mark is not an unbeliever but what do I tell everyone at church. I am so confused with denominations. Any suggestions??

Well, Catholicism is Christianity (rewind a few centuries to pre-schism and all Christians would be Catholic). I think you might need to learn a few things about Catholicism to, if nothing else, know more about your husband-to-be. I would suggest starting be asking questions in the Catholic denominational forum here.

Remember, ultimately, the only ones you have to answer to regarding your marriage is God, your future husband, and yourself. I would suggest taking in as much counsel as you can from others (sorry if I'm no big help, lol) and information about Catholicism vs. Protestantism and simply to be completely convinced in your own mind, whatever you do.

Blessings to you!

First of all, I believe that there are true believers in every denomination. What I mean by that is that they have a geniune faith and relationship with God. From what you've said about Mark, he seems like he is a true believer. But likewise, there are those people in denominations that are not true believers. They are not serious with God. They go to church, but their lifestyle is such that they are obviously not into the things of God. True believers believe in Christ who died for them and have hopes based on the Lord Jesus' death burial and ressureection, having the hope of being resurrected likewise on the last day. And they trust God in their everyday life.

The core beliefs you both have seem solid. You both believe in Jesus for salvation, which is the most important part. However, how your faith expressed in worship and in doctrine will differ. Catholic services are ritualistic and pious whereby Baptists are less formal and free-flowing. Catholics believe in seven sacraments that bestow grace on the believer and are essential for saving faith, while Baptists observe the ordinances of the Lord's Supper and Believer's Baptism, but neither one of these are necessary for salvation, only simple faith in Christ.

What your friends at church are probably concerned with is that there might be conflict in the way you believe in Christ which could cause contention between you two because of the above stated reasons. Your Baptist friends are probably thinking that your Catholic fiance isn't really saved because he is relying on works (read sacraments and being good) for his salvation, probably because of a misunderstanding about how Catholics and Orthodox churches view the process of salvation, which seems to be a progressive grace process. Baptists believe that salvation is instantaneous upon accepting Christ most believe that once saved, you don't have to work at maintaining salvation.

These two different approaches to Christianity may or may not be a problem in the marriage. Certainly it would be easier if you were both in the same church and had the same mindset, in order to avoid confusion between yourselves and with your children. But it doesn't necessirly cause problems for every couple in the same situation. Sometimes compromises can be reached, and that is something that you and your fiance ought to sit down and talk about.

The main thing is that you both have a strong, firm relationship with the Lord. That you trust and love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, for when God is at the center of your marriage, and the love of God is present in your lives, then you will enjoy a secure marital bliss. God is the source of love and will strengthen the love you already have for your fiance and strengthen the love he already has for you.

Thank you so much for your reply. I especially feel so strong about how God strengthens our relationships. We have been together for 2 1/2 years and have gone through many tough times together. Ever since I accepted Christ into my life we have gone through even tougher times(It feels like we have been together longer) and God always seems to get us out an even stronger couple. Just when I think that we might break up we come to an agreement and work things out. This makes me see how much God loves us. I am not feeling at peace with walking away from him because he is of a different denomination. :amen:

Hello Sister,

How is your walk with Jesus is going? I am so happy that you became saved.

What is the name of the church where you are a member? Do you feel that you are learning about the Bible and how to live a Christian life? When I first converted, the most important thing for me was figuring out- "now what do I do?"

Fast- of your own free will and of your own design. I usually fast from all food and drink for 24 h to focus on God and hear His voice more clearly.

Pray- Pray without ceasing. Remember that God is you Father and you can speak to him anytime you like in any language and about anything.

Bible- Do you have a Bible? What scriptures are your favorites so far? I love to search the online Bible Gateway.

God willing, everything is going well with you and your fiance.

I will also send you a PM in case you are not reading this thread.

In Messiah,
Natanya

Welcome to the family of God, my sister in Christ. May HE give you the presence of the Holy Spirit and guide you in everything you do.
