A light-hearted topic. :) What would Jews and MJ's (if that's the correct way to put it) do up here in the far north? I live in Whitehorse. The shortest day involves the sun setting at 3:48 pm (and rising at 10:09 am). The longest day involves the sun setting at 11:47 pm (and rising at 4:28 am). Since the times are extreme, would they simply pick a time (say 6:00pm) and say that starts the new day? Or would they go along with the sunset times?

Then there's further up north, like Old Crow, where the sun stays up or down for about a month. Might be problematic if the new day didn't start for a month or so. :D

I merely ask out of curiosity.

Reminds me of a joke I once heard:

NASA decided it was time to represent the religious of our great nation in an orbital shot. The shuttle was to go up and orbit six times in 36 hours and return. The news coverage would be a great boost to the space agency. Three men were selected: a catholic priest, a protestant minister and a Jewish rabbi.

As the shuttle landed the press crowded around the disembarking religious men, asking them what they thought of the trip.

The priest stepped up to the mic and glowing expounded on the wonders of G-d’s creation. When it was the minister’s turn he described feelings of awe as he had viewed the great power of G-d as seen looking out into the universe and back at our beautiful planet. As the rabbi came up to the mic he needed assistance standing up, the poor man looked exhausted.

A reported yelled out, “Rabbi what happened?” The rabbi lifted his head to the mic and said……

“Shakarit, minkha, ma’ariv, shakarit, minkha, ma’ariv, shakarit, minkha, ma’ariv, shakarit………..”

Actually what the Ilan Ramon did was use the times in Jerusalem for that time of year. Have you considered posting your question on one of the orthodox “ask a Rabbi” sites??

Shalom TCapp,

In my mind I think of telling where the day starts and ends at the equator or rather along the line of Israel as the tell time for the world. To me instead of GMT we would have YHWH Time :D
Shalom,

Actually, there are set times for areas that have extreme variations of sunset and sunrise. Those areas far north or south where Solar/Lunar rotations place Kabbalas Shabbos, Havdolah/Motzei Shabbos, and the Moadim outside the acceptable variances of Halachic acceptance have been given set schedules to follow. These schedules are often set by local Va'adim or Batei Din, so it isn't a guessing game. In most cases an individual is referred to CYLR to help them follow their local observance. Sites like HebCal.Com have the time schedules programed into their Luach software and they will give you the correct local Candle Lighting times and Havdolah times.
