• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Just a question..

I am asking a question, not in hopes of creating an arguement, but out of curiosity:

For the non-Christians in the forum, Why do you come to a Christian forum as opposed to one where the views are closer to yours?

(Backwards answer for me: Why do I visit threads that aren't Christian: curiosity on others views for the most part, I'm solid in my faith, but I like to see how others think)

Thanks for your answer, Melissa

Why shouldn't we visit a Christian forum?

I come here to have discussions and hopefully learn about other faiths, and I come here because this is the only Christian forum I know of that allows for people of different faiths to join.

I came because i wasn't sure about the existance of God, and wanted to share some ideas to try and make my own mind up about him. Since i've been here, i've quite enjoyed the debate on the forum even if i have felt like tearing my hair out at times. The lack of humour and sensitivity of certain people has been problematic, and you can feel like you are being gagged, but those people are actually making me more determined to stay :)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like you shouldn't join, I just wondered why, which your answer is sufficient. Same reason I read the "Non-Christian" threads.
Thanks for your answer, Melissa

I know where you are coming from (as far as tearing your hair out..). People in general (not Christian or non-Christian) can be rude and thoughtless much of the time. Some people are just abrasive by nature. Some (like me:() sometimes say things the wrong way, and then have to apologize for being a butt head. I'm glad you are staying. I was an athiest from the time I was a child until 23. My prayer is that you find out who the God I worship is, but that will not be because of me or any other person on this forum, it would be because of the Holy Spirit (IMO). I hope you find what you are looking for.

In His Grip, Melissa

I hang out with people who think like me all the time. I come here because I'm curious about people who don't.

ditto for me. I don't go to non-Christian sites, but I do read the non-Christian threads. Actually, I hang out with people who don't think like me and some who do. I am not concerned so much with other people's beliefs, because I feel that they will find their own path with out my help. I used to have a "burden" for the un-saved (according to Christian beliefs), but someone asked me "Who do you think you are, the Holy Spirit?" That was like a slap in the face and made me realize I was trying to do what only God can do. So I've chilled out so to speak, and only hope that non-believers see something different in me that they wonder about. (Hopefully.. I fall so many times).

I didn't come here to learn about or discuss my own religion. I came here to learn about the religion which 75% of my fellow citizens claim to be. As for why I'm still around, I enjoy conversating with people on the net, and this place is a pretty active site. I'd rather come here and take part in several conversations a day on a variety of subjects, and get replies and such, rather than go to a Pagan-centric site and maybe get a reply to my posts in a week or twelve, and only discuss a small range of topics.

I first found this site off of FSTDT's Top 100 list, honestly. What I find quite funny is a lot of the quotes on that list come from this site. At first I clicked the link to this site under a quote to post my opinion on something someone wrote in one of these forums that was absolutely disgusting.

But now that I've explored the site a bit it's interesting to find out other people's opinions on things. I've never had a sit down convo with a Christian before because it usually ends up to be a debate. So I enjoy being able to find things out from afar without starting controversy.

That list scares me. O.O

Because it's more intellectually stimulating than having a bunch of people who agree on something in the same room.

This is the place where we can violate the second rule of polite conversation (i.e., never discuss religion; #1 is politics).

Because I find conversation more interesting when it is challenging than when it´s merely mutual confirmation.
Even if I went to a dedicated atheist board, the interesting part wouldn´t be conversations like
"I don´t believe that god exists."
"Neither do I."
"Glad to see we are in agreement."
but the parts where there´s a diversity of opinions.

You mustn´t forget that for a non-believer the idea of god doesn´t have the significance it has for a believer. The non-believer doesn´t even believe that a god exists, after all.
In regards to all other topics the variety of opinions among Christians is roughly as widespread as in any other group.

But in view of the fact that religion is a strong factor in the world around me, and in view of the fact that this is completely beyond me, I am of course interested to find out how and why people do believe those things that appear absurd to me.

However, you have a point in that arguments of the "because the bible says so" sort are not really arguments, in my book, and therefore the conversation with some Christians a priori lacks the common ground that is required for successful communication.

Where's the fun in only conversing with people who agree with you? Preaching to the choir (no pun intended) is boring.

That's how I first found this site also.

But I stayed because learning about other people's beliefs (from their posts) has helped me to better understand my own.

It didn't. But since I've been on this forum, I have received vibes from certain members who feel that non-Christians shouldn't be here.

I found this site there too =P.
To be honest, I was like "hrweghw4`g4ugy 4oy [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]?!" when I read that stuff... So I came here to reply "in the name of evolution!" xD
I don't know, I like discussing =P. Discussing/debating thing makes you learn.
Also, as pointed before, there is no fun in arguing with a person who thinks the same that you do.

Yeah, I also found this site through FSTDT (which has gone downhill lately, in my opinion - someone say something ridiculous, quick!).

I like coming here because I find it reassuring to hear compassionate Christians defend sane positions. I come across a lot of misdirected vitriol and anger on these boards, but I also encounter people who seem genuinely Christ-like in their day-to-day interactions, and that gives me hope for the world.

I also come here because I am a Philosophy & Theology undergrad and I am interested in expanding my understanding of different critical interpretations of the Bible, and discussing philosophical questions.

And I like a good argument :)
