  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just a question or two!

My hubby and I are not really trying to get pregnant but if it happens it happens. I mean we would love to be pregnant (I take my at home test on Friday and am really very excited) but if we are not, then we will just try again next month! :)

But I have a few questions. When you find out that you are, do you immediately call your doctor and make an appointment?

What do you do right after you find out you are (by home test)?

How long before they know if you are having multiples?

How long before they know the sex of the baby?

I have been doing research online but everywhere seems to be a little different.

Does anyone know any good books on things you can do to help the baby develope in womb?

Sorry, this will be my first pregnancy (as if you couldnt already tell) And I am bit nervous!! I will be the first out of my generation to have babies in my family, and that in itself is a little nerve wracking.

Any advice?

~Nic

Honeymoon baby!

But I have a few questions. When you find out that you are, do you immediately call your doctor and make an appointment?

Some people do, but personally I don't. Your ante-natal care begins at 12 weeks, so you really just want to make your initial appointment a few weeks in advance of this so that whatever paperworks needs sorting out can happen. I tend to go around the 7 or 8 week mark.

What do you do right after you find out you are (by home test)?

Tell hubby and then do nothing...you can make sure you are taking folic acid, but hopefully you are already doing that.

How long before they know if you are having multiples?

You can find out at an ultrasound. If you have a family history, perhaps you can schedule an early ultrasound. The size of your abdomen should start to arouse suspicions around the 16 week mark.

How long before they know the sex of the baby?

At your 20 week ultrasound

Does anyone know any good books on things you can do to help the baby develope in womb?

Personally, I would say, don't worry. Babies are amazingly resiliant.

There's a recent thread here on books - sometime in the last month.

Thanks Naomi!! (We didnt yet go on that honeymoon, its scheduled for this February! )

I guess I should go get some folic Acid then? I don't know what I should be doing!

And yes, multiples run in my family. In just the last few generations: I have twin little sisters, I have triplet cousins, my hubby is a twin..etc.

So yes multiples run in both familys, and every generation has had them :)

Thank you so much for answering my questions!!!!

I found out I was pregnant at 6.5 weeks. I made my first prenatal appt 3 days later. I went to the doctors for the first time at 10 weeks.

Right after I found out, my DH and I hugged, signed the paperwork for the stuff at New Life Pregnancy Centre(that's where we found out) then DH went to work and I went home.

I found out I wasn't having multiples at 11 weeks when I had my first ultrasound and found out the baby is a boy at 18 weeks.

I really liked www.pregnancy.org. They have a calender which tells you what's happening by the day.

Get some folic acid--or just a pre-natal vitamin. You can find them at health food stores. '

You might also want to examine and think about your attitudes and expectations for birth---because that will very likely determine what you will read, what kind of care giver you will choose (Doctor or midwife.... at home, in hospital, or birth center birth... trying for a non-medicated birth, or knowing that you want an epidural).

If you are artsy at all there is a great book entitled Birthing From WIthin- which discusses and examines our deeply rooted and held beliefs and fears about birth--so that we can understand what are attitudes actually are.

I would, as a starting point for books look at the ones by Dr. William and Martha Sears. The Pregnancy Book and The Birth Book. I find their books to be pretty even-handed-- dealing with issues without too much of a bias in one direction or another.

And prayers going up for you and your family!!

If you are trying to get pregnant or not trying to avoid pregnancy, then you should probably start taking the prenatal vitamin or folic acid even if you aren't pregnant this month, to get your body's supply built up in case of a baby. :)

I definitely agree with RoseofLima about doing some research to figure out what type of care you want, and maybe even go interview them before you make your final decision. Here is an article that will help you get an idea of what the options are:

And here's one that will help you with interview questions to ask:

First and foremost, I send hopeful prayers your directions! Pregnancy is so exciting!:prayer:
My pregnancy now is my first and I struggled with your questions and MUCH more when I found out I was pregnant...LOL...I tried to go to the emergency room!!!!
As soon as you find out that you are indeed pregnant, schedule an appointment with your OB/GYN.

 I am not sure about the multiples question...but I would think that you would find that out around 20 weeks...which is ALSO when you find out the sex of the baby!

The two books that I got that have helped me A GREAT DEAL are "What to expect when you are expecting" and "Your pregnancy week by week" You should be able to find these at any book store...but I would check half price books, if you have one because they always have GREAT deals on pregnancy books!!! :)

Good luck and I am praying for you, sister!!!

Thank you ladies! I am taking everything you say to heart!!

My hubby and I went to pregnancy.org last night and looked over everything I would need to do and what I would need to stay away from.

Did you know that you are supposed to avoid cats? How am I supposed to do that? I have two and I love them dearly! I couldnt give them away :(

I think I have more questions now that I read that and more fears than I did before :sigh: Three more days and I find out! :)

You don't have to throw your cats out :)

The issue is toxoplasmosis, which can live in cat faeces, and can also be found in undercooked meats.

To risk toxoplasmosis from a cat, it would have to have the active disease (not that you would know) *and* you would have to handle cat faeces *and* put them (well, traces) in your mouth during your first trimester. Both you and your cat can only get toxoplasmosis once, so both these events would have to happen in your first trimester.

To avoid this risk completely, you should make sure you wear gloves when changing the cat litter and always wash your hands thoroughly. Better still, get DH to do it (don't tell him about cat having to get it during your first trimester). And to be ultra-safe, get him to do all the gardening as well. :)

As for undercooked meats - make sure they are cooked.

Thanks Naomi!!

You just calmed me down a lot! :)

DH said he would change it if I got rid of one of the cats :( He doesnt like one of the cats because she sheds more than the other (As if I could control that :sigh: ) But I refuse to get rid of either of them, so I am glad I can change the litter box (with precautions).

Thank you thank you thank you!

As for uncooked meat... well... I dont like it mooing at me anyways. ;)
