All through history, possibly, people claiming to be Christians have made different claims. So, even if he can point out certain people who claimed to be Christians and who say what he says, I would say this is not evidence. It is he choosing, perhaps, to use the people who support what he prefers to believe.

What difference does it make? What does he say this therefore should mean, even if he were right?? People can have motives; his motives could show through what he is claiming. Some people with their ideas also claim their ideas mean we need to join their group, or at least get away from some group.

I remember that there was a Mark who ran out on Paul. If this is the one you are talking about, I do not think he was the beloved disciple. I would think the beloved disciple would have been mentoring Paul, and not Paul deciding if that John could be with Paul. The beloved disciple would be specialized for ministering to the Jews, possibly, going by Galatians 2:8-9 which does mention "John" who apparently was ministering with Peter, therefore to the Jews. So, someone with Paul would not be the John who is mentioned in Galatians 2:8-9 < you might consider this to be evidence.
