  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems to us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists."Presidential Campaign Announcement Speech

What he said was this:

"They're sending people that have a lot of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

Quite obviously, he was not saying that all Mexicans are rapists.

Yet that is how it was reported and rendered in speeches by his opponents for years afterwards. So that's not a lie on Trump's part although we might conclude that it was one on the part of his critics.

Which story they peddle, depends on what they want to be true that day.

He just says that they are rapists. "With a few good people, I assume." Everyone got the message. Puts a sharper point on it, doesn't it?

And in addition, there are indeed facts which need to be considered even as we recognize alternate facts. For example, dropping the bomb on Hiroshima was controversial. It's a fact that it hastened the end of the war, but at the same time it resulted in the deaths of more than a hundred thousand civilian lives. Those are alternatives and both are factually correct.
? Those are the outcomes, not alternatives, from dropping the bomb, pros, and cons.
The alternative would be to not drop the bomb.

Yes, he faced a choice, but these are two different sets of facts that Truman had to consider. It's not as though one is false and the other true. They're both true.

That, however, is not how we are expected to understand Mrs. Conway's words when she spoke of "alternative facts."

Seeing Spicer wasn't facing two actual/factual sets of facts about the crowd...

What were the two facts about the crowd size that Spicer had to choose from?

There was the size of the crowd gathered in Washington DC...and there was the size of the crowd counting all who watched, around the globe, by TV.

Spicer worded his statement badly enough to be referring to the record-setting total of viewers and to the number of people on the Mall almost in the same thought. Conway referred to this, but of course there was already blood in the water for the press corps by that time.

That's true.

Spicer said, "That was the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period."

To support his claim, Spicer offered a few pieces of misleading or inaccurate evidence.

He said that floor coverings highlighting empty spaces on the National Mall were not used for previous inaugurations, but these were in place for Obama’s 2013 inauguration.

He claimed metro ridership was higher for Trump’s inaugural than for Obama’s 2013 inaugural, but he compared numbers for the morning of Obama’s inaugural to the whole day for Trump’s.

Spicer suggested 720,000 attended Trump’s inauguration, while organizers said they expected 700,000 to 900,000, and Trump himself estimated 1.5 million. All of those figures are less than the 1.8 million people who attended Obama’s 2009 inaugural.

We rate Spicer’s claim Pants on Fire.
PolitiFact - Donald Trump had biggest inaugural crowd ever? Metrics don't show it

If Spicer was talking about broadcast audience, he's have mentioned it in his attempts to justify his claim. So we know that's not case. He had his orders from Trump to lie about it, and he did his best with what he had.

Oh Look! Here is the topic!

During a town hall with CNN on Tuesday night, President Joe Biden blatantly lied about when the COVID-19 vaccine was created. According to the president, the vaccine for the Wuhan coronavirus was not yet available when his administration took over on Jan. 20.

and then this:
Facts First: Biden's claim is false; it's not true that there was an initial media consensus that the 100 million goal was impossible. Some of the early news coverage of the goal did not even question whether it was plausible. Some experts featured in the early coverage, including CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, said the goal was achievable. And while some journalists and experts were more skeptical, cautioning that the goal was ambitious, they did not go so far as to say it was impossible.

See, no mention of Trump.

Oh Look! Here is the topic!

See, no mention of Trump.

Biden could have accurately said that some of the early coverage was skeptical.
Citing production challenges faced by vaccine manufacturers, science journalist Laurie Garrett said on MSNBC on the day of the announcement that it was "unclear" whether Biden could achieve the goal. A New York Times article that day described the goal as "ambitious," said its fulfilment would "require no hiccups in manufacturing or distributing the vaccine and a willingness by Americans to be vaccinated," and added: "Mr. Biden's vaccine timeline is achievable, experts say, but it may be optimistic."
The Times article went on to quote former Baltimore health commissioner Dr. Leana Wen, a CNN medical analyst, who said: "Distribution has to be seamless all across the U.S., and that means every state and local health department coordinating. And there's the issue of public trust. So I certainly hope that it happens, but (it's) very optimistic."

Fact check: Biden falsely claims journalists had all said his vaccination goal was 'not possible' - CNNPolitics

Biden exaggerated, if he said "all", when he should have said "most." And while his program was ambitious and had many reporters and scientists skeptical that he could meet his goals, most of them didn't call it "impossible."

So bad on Biden. Some folks are going to be unhappy that the same people who gave Trump a pass on his many outrageous lies, are clutching their pearls when Biden exaggerates.

That's how it is. It's why ultimately, they lost. And yes, there is a double standard, holding Biden to a much, much higher standard than they applied to Trump. This is just one of the more noticeable cases. Might as well get used to it. Will they do better if you remind them from time to time?

Worth a try, but don't get your hopes up.

Produce something that is not from a mouthpiece for the political Left and we'll talk.

Sean Spicer was a mouthpiece for Donald Trump. I thought you knew.
