I love Joan of Arcadia too! I discuss the show on another site's forum, but can't seem to find a Christian perspective. The show is awesomely written but there are a few things that may start to bother me, depending on where they go with it. As you can see, I am new here - is this the place to talk about it or is there chat?

well, i guess what i like about it is that it makes the subject of God more approachable in a "un-religious way". it's more relaxed, casual and not preachy. it opens up the thought of Him in a softer way.

:) and i can relate to Joan and some of her struggles with God and life.
Its not always clear why things happen to her, but it also shows how some of her actions have reactions too.

what's your favourite episode?

i think mine is the one where she builds a boat. that was hilarious!

ps. welcome!

Thanks much, and howdy!

My favorite episode (so far!) was "Jump". That's the one where Joan repaired her relationship with Adam and he found out what his mother wrote to him before she committed suicide. I don't really cry at movies or TV shows, but that one got me. The way they shot the scene in the Girardi's kitchen where Helen read the note was just perfect. That's also the ep that had Luke and Grace building the rocket or whatever the heck the science fair project was.

I'm all for Luke's girlfriend to be Grace, not Glynis. And I'm all for Joan wising up to see just how much Adam likes her.

Funny, I haven't been this interested in a TV show for a long time.
And I totally agree that it's definitely not a preachy show, or sugar-coated, but it kind of bugs me how Joan's been talking to God lately - all smart alecky and whatnot. Maybe it's just me.

I have two decidedly non-Christian opinions of this show. Further I don't watch it regularly, but...

As a dirty "old" man, I think Amber Tamblin is very cute and quite a good actress.

As an atheist who has read the OT, I find the series take on Joan (ironic) Osbourne's What if God was one of us appealing. I remember her being criticized for her song by some religious reactionaries, but the sentiment is reflective of Joan of Arcadia. The song and series remind me of my personal vision of Genesis (had it happened) of God sitting down with Adam and Eve giving them sewing lessons. (Gen 3:21)

Love this show. Like that I can watch it with my kids. And I love that song...but then I liked it before it was attached to this show. (completely my style of music)

I like that it reflects my belief that everything and everyone are interwoven. And I like that the premise has not been forced into the confines of a dogma bag. (sorry..that was a little joke...if it offends anyone who is in that mind set...I apologize)

Although I enjoy Christian rock more than the conventional praise style, I think that Joan of Arcadia has the potential to really do some good work. I'm willing to bet that if the show gives the Christian answer to alot of life's tougher problems, many people would be led to Christ. And I'd like to see Joan battle atheism, but that might be too much to ask from a drama, not a discussion series... ;)
Who knows? I think it's a good idea for people to be thinking about Jesus, whether it's negative or positive- makes it easier to know who to pray for :) .

Right, me too, but would you do that if He were standing right in front of you?

The good thing is that none of us are - especially me!

What'd you guys think of the last new episode - the one where Joan had her pic taken in her undies? I liked that it looks as if she and Adam are going to realize they were meant to be together. But the scene with the laundry had me scratching my head  . How can a science geek not know how to operate a washing machine? And it seems they were making Joan out to be an idiot or something.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Joan tackle some more pressing issues.

I agree. Her putting her foot in the washing machine, and keeping it there, was a little hard to believe. :D

Joan's angst "You're the one who made us ashamed to be naked" made me laugh dispite myself.

As always....the antics of Joan Girardi lead to deaper more profound consequences. Sending the message to anyone who can put two and two together, that the ripple effects of our actions are often far reaching and completely unexpected.

This show teaches the lesson "do unto others, what you would have them do unto you" in a way that even a child should be able to understand. And as a mother who is trying to drive that point home to my own children....I think that's a good thing.

I really like the show, but I just wish they would show Joan sharing Christ with others instead of keeping it to herself. I would atleast like to see something that tells viewers how to become saved.

But, I really do like the show!

I really enjoy it.

I think the show has a lot of potential for Christian discussions.

I don't always agree with the way God is presented but at least He is out there.

My favorite episode was the one where she made friends while jump roping with the inner city girl. The ending hit me like a brick. It brought home the message of how sometimes we are there to plant seeds and we have to trust God with the rest of it.

I agree, that was a good one. I was struck by Joan's saying "But I wanted to help her!" Our part is just a piece of a much bigger puzzle. It's not always our job to "fix" things for other people. Really good episode.

I know that someone has probably thought this, but I'm not sure if it's ever actually been said. This is a mainstreem, prime time television show. If it were limited to the perameters of mainstreem Christianity, who's Christian religion would be right? Methodist? Baptist? Catholic? Presbyterian? There are some fundamental differences in all these religions. It's just impossible to please everyone. Besides, I've always thought it a little unreasonable to want church in T.V.

Here's the Friday's episode:
