  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is an unlikely return reminiscent of Harry Potter, "The Boy Who Lived", himself (or the Dark Lord Voldemort depending on your opinion). J.K. Rowling, author of the globally adored fantasy series who in recent years became a pariah in some quarters over her views on transgender people, appears to have just won the culture war she has been fighting for the past five years.

A spokesperson for the network followed up with a statement calling Rowling's contributions "invaluable" and saying about her trans crusade: "J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement."

The money does not hurt either.

1. I enjoyed reading the Harry Potter books. I still think about questions like "What would you see in the Mirror of Erised?" or "What would a Boggart look like to you?"

2. It's going to be tough to recast the characters. Daniel Radcliffe is the image of Harry Potter I have in my mind, even though I read the books before watching the movies.

3. On the other hand, the movies felt rushed to me, in the sense that you can't cram a long book into a 2-hour movie and still do justice to the content. A TV show is a better forum for presenting that kind of book series.

4. It is possible to enjoy an artist's work (and for that work to be genuinely good) even if one disagrees with the artist about some things, or even if the artist is a flawed human being. Is there any human being with whom I agree 100%, or who is without flaw?

5. The problem of simultaneously honoring cis women's rights and honoring transgender people's rights is complicated, and it deserves more nuanced and empathetic conversations than simply shouting at each other online and boycotting everything.
