Chimps are apes that evolved from a different ape which was neither chimp nor human. At some point, a species of ape existed that gave rise to both humans and chimps, but was neither human nor chimp.

Both species have evolved a long way from that common ancestor. But we are genetically closer to chimps than either of us is related to any other living species. So genetics says that the common ancestor diverged from other apes before humans and chimps evolved.

All that's really necessary is for a chemical system to be able to continously gain energy from the enviornment, and replicate by itself. That would be the most primitive form of life. I have heard that the moment that Earth cooled enough for fossilized life to even be possible…there was fossilized life.

We now have a large number of transitional forms in fossils. Not surprisingly, Australopithecines are anatomically transitional between forest apes and humans in hips, knees, and spines. Exactly what you'd expect of a transitional ape becoming bipedal.
