The failure here is the notion that an unbeliever can "experience Christ in your heart".

We are not accepting Jesus per se. We are accepting His Gospel of the Kingdom of God, over that of the world man has made in our own image. Our control and oppression over each other is coming to an end as His will, not ours, be done. Jesus opened that door based on that premise by living a life following the will of the Father alone.
