  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

You know the reason why Galileo was under fire primarily stemmed from his very offensive and personal criticism of the Church after they told him to stop -- and not stop bcause they disapproved, stop because there were other monks doing the exact same work?

All the charges against the Catholic church were trumped up by Protestants.

I wouldn't be surprised if that were a little true but the point is that Galileo didn't WANT to give anything up. He was faced with "do this or face the inquisition" so of course self preservation won. It is nice though that he still studied in secret.

We are actually not the most religious nation in terms of Christianity; Ireland and Italy allegedly have us beat, but I am not positive. For protestantism I think we are numbero uno .

Ah yep I was thinking protestantism, mainly evangelicals. I wasn't thinking along the lines of Catholicism in which case you are right.

You're quite correct. I obviously had a brain freez when I was calculating. Thank you for the correction. I will be editing my remark.

Hey. It happens to us all. I re-read your post several times and checked my math several more just to be sure that I wasn't about to make a fool of myself.

On the StraightDope message board, there used to be a moderator (may still be) name Gaudere.

Gaudere's law was that any post correcting the grammar of another poster itself contains a grammatical error.

I'm sure that there are corollaries that apply here, too.

It's had me paranoid ever since.

You have zero proof of that, I assume. Show me it.
Proof? What are you talking about? Go read some of the mail PZ Myers (the man who coined the phrase. Credit where credit is due.) got for his eucharist stunt. Go to any atheist discussion board. You can find numerous posts about how 'you atheists don't pick on Islam because they are scary people. If Christians weren't so nice, you wouldn't pick on us.' This is fatwah envy.

And even define 'more radical.'
Have you seen Jesus Camp? Those people.

Your statement is awesome, though, because finally an atheist is turning some slight shade of criticism to radical Islam .I praise you for that. :groupray:

I thought you meant Fatwah envy like in the literal sense that we wished we could declare Fatwahs/Moqawamas/Jihads.

I do not really think we actually are saying ,"we want to declare a Fatwah."

I think we are saying, "You're cowardly and the fact that you attack us for being 'narrow minded' when there are these guys out there is rather ridiculous."

A couple of points.

One, most atheists in the US don't have much to do with Islam. Muslims are not trying to take over the government here or forcing their delusions onto the rest of us.

Two, go read the letters. No where is it pointing out that Islam is more narrow minded than Christianity, it is much more "You won't do that to Islam because you're scared." The sub-text of that (and even in bold text in some the more hilarious ones) is that if some Christians would only set stuff on fire or kill a few people when their beliefs are threatened, atheists would keep their mouths shut.

Ugh I'm going to puke. "I think Galileo did the right thing when he gave up science for grace". If only the kid knew the truth. *sigh*

And the whole "science doesn't prove anything".

Was that the scene where the kid was homeschooling and his mother was all excited to demonstrate how science is bunk? Creepy stuff.

"I know what you did last night"
Now, the whole world knows what he did.

By the measure you judge...

He's the only one filmed who had an issue with the documentary... I can't remember if he complained before or after he was outed...

Your first point is good.

Your second point I can see the rationale behind that and perhaps there are even some real jerks who believe that, but I think overall a lot of us are not interested in that style. At least, I am not.

You gotta check this out:

http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Camp-Be..._bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1222064598&sr=8-1

About 80 million Americans describe themselves as evangelicals. They are home schooling their children, teaching them "creationism" and other...stuff.

One lady calls the children who are dutiful enough to attend church "fat and lazy," even though she herself is probably 100 lbs. overweight.

She then goes on to encourage the children to speak in tongues. She says that they have to get to the children, since the "muslims" are teaching their children to "strap bombs to their bodies when they're 5 and 6." Isn't this wonderful? It's a cold war between muslims and christians to see who can train the most suicide bombers.

Sometimes, you can't make stuff up this strange.

I was delighted when, a few years ago, the state of California passed legal restrictions against the overrated practice known as homeschooling. It is unfortunate, but homeschooled children tend to have worse social skills and more difficulty dealing with the real world. That is not to say that exceptions don't occur, but parents need to realize that they are putting their children at an inherent disadvantage when they choose to homeschool. Only if that disadvantage can be offset and justified by other sorts of gains, such as removing the child from a poorly-run public school and not having enough money to send the child to any nearby private school, should the decision to homeschool even be considered. Thankfully, in California, this is not always an option.

Really? You mean like the Crusades? The civil war in Bosnia? The terrorism in Northern Ireland? The Iraqi War? All that stuff, which was partly or totally done in the name of Christianity?

I don't see where the war in the Middle East has anything to do with Christianity. There might be zealous Christians who approve, but that isn't the purpose of the war.

It certainly wasn't the purpose for the war--either the announced reasons or the actual reasons--but some American Christians have adopted a crusade-like mentality in order to support the war.

In the "Jesus Camp" DVD extras, they interview a family that actually does this.

It's unfortunate that they do that and blur the actual point of it. I can't stand how every worldly event can't just be simple, based on logic and politics. Some zealot has to muck things up and declare it a holy war.

Out of curiosity: has a linguist ever reviewed the babblings of these people who speak in tongues? Can they verify if an actual language is being spoken? I tend to think not.

Hehe thats the point, its not an ancient language, its the language of heaven or whatever thats what I was taught. :p

Language of heaven? Sounds like mass inspired delusion to me. If heaven is filled with the endless sounds of dribbling babies and slobbering canines... *shudder* good thing it does not exist.

Lol, my nan would be turning over in her grave if she heard you say this. Wouldn't be hard to find you either she knows where you are. She's the one who said all this. :p
