in another thread the topic of the Jesuits came up

it seems that in their long history, they have always been controversial figures

it saddened me to see that some people were rather flippant in their criticisms of such a respected order of Priests
an order that has now given us our current Pope :)

at the same time, I have heard many anecdotal stories about the Jesuits that have been troubling
such as support for "Liberation Theology" which has been condemned by Pope John Paul II

I know @Colin and @S.ilvio feel very passionately about this subject :)

I have great respect for St. Ignatius of Loyola, he did much to combat heresy in Europe
St. Francis Xavier was a missionary who went to the ends of the earth out of love for Christ and His Church

And I think it would have been better to leave it at that , for I have a hunch , OBOB going downhill as it is , that this thread will be just another opportunity for offensive comments .

In the meantime may the Saints and Beati of the Society of Jesus pray for us......

I do not know much about the Jesuits but I often hear people refer to them as liberal. Not sure why that is though. The few I have seen on EWTN have not given that impression.

Fundamentalist will often label people liberal when presented with information that contradicts their political ideology.

Jesuits are the intellectual arm of the Catholic Church. They help keep the Church from becoming just another religious institution.

I have never seen a liberal Jesuit like I said. I am getting tired of politics being mixed with faith.

Why do you fear criticism of the order? Why must people fake unwavering support or go against conscience lest they be called offensive? Reminds me of typical liberalism: "We support everyone, so long as you believe exactly as we do. If not, you're offensive and we want nothing to do with you."

I think questioning is healthy as long as it is respectful. It is how a lot of us learn.

Jesuits and their admirers have nothing to fear.

But ill-informed half truths are very tiresome, as I'm sure you can appreciate.

The Jesuits are passionate about defending the Faith through actions. Educating, advocating for the poor and being the most dependable line of defence the Church can depend on...

Educating , certainly . I know all about it .

Just 10 miles down the road from me is Stonyhurst College . The buildings were given to the Society of Jesus in 1794 , and the Society founded a public school there . It still has a Jesuit presence but is staffed mainly by laypeople now . There is a beautiful college chapel and also a parish church attached to the college . When I had my motorcycle I often went there during the summer months for Saturday evening Mass .
A very impressive place......

This is a Jesuit weekly magazine, that I'm subscribed to.

The articles are top notch.
CatholicCulture.Org's website review of them puts them in the danger category. Here's what they say about the America website:

Description
This is the official home page of America, a weekly "Catholic" magazine published by the Jesuits. It contains news, analysis, opinion, commentary on the Sunday Scripture readings, and reviews of books, films, and TV. America Press, Inc., the publisher of America magazine, also sponsors a Catholic book of the month club specializing in theology and spirituality.

The site itself contains selected articles from the current issue and a complete archive of past issues. There are numerous articles on this site, and many of them should be read only with extreme caution. Some of the authors and material directly oppose or undermine the Church's teachings and authority.

If you take a look at the order you discover that the Society of Jesus only picks smart, well educated (or highly educable) men of action. They seem to be coached to work, survive and thrive in situations the would grind most of us to the ground. They build, finance, recruit, teach, evangelize and do more by 9 AM than most of us do all day.

They have an almost innate understanding of the needs and trials of the faithful and tend to be more protective and guiding then authoritarian and commanding- of them.

They're an easy order to dislike for a certain segment of Catholics laity and leadership as well as a segment of Christians generally.
