  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I haven't formed an opinion.

"This dynamic is also evident in J.D. Vance, the Republican Party vice presidential nominee, who transitioned from Protestantism to atheism and then to Catholicism after marrying his wife, a Hindu, in 2019. At the Republican National Convention, his wife, Usha Vance, discussed how he embraced her family’s vegetarian lifestyle. Vance himself shared how her influence has deepened his commitment to his Catholic faith."

I think seeing this kind of diversity among candidates/potential candidates is good because it reflects the diverse nature of our culture and society. The fact that JD Vance is married to a Hindu is good for the GOP, which has leaned toward the homogeneous, to put it kindly.

Vance is a more complicated figure than some Democrat political strategists are presenting him as.

However, his rhetoric sounds too much like Catholic Integralism, and his views on liberalism and democracy don't seem to be realistic. While he is critical of weaknesses of liberalism, he doesn't seem to be seriously interested in integrating the positive aspects of liberalism, and his solution, the neo-Integralism of somebody like Patrick Deneen, doesn't sound like it will work out, it sounds like a recipe for religious intolerance, violence, and the suppression of personal liberties that have resulted in more opportunities for human flourishing, particularly among socially marginalized groups.

We have seen a lot of that recently - directed against Christians in America and Canada - would like to know more about how J.D. Vance is also doing it

Religious violence against Christians? I don't think so.
