hey all... I have posting so much in the GT and GA section I thought I would take a look around the other parts of the forum.... since I am a jazz lover, and I see this thread has been somewhat ressurrected... here goes my favs.... since the post directly above me is instrument related.. and since I am a guitar music lover.... here are my favs...

I really love jazz fusion or jazz rock fusion ... these guys are at the top of the heap musically, IMHO.... probably my fav guitarist of all time is Frank Gambale from Australia.... mind blowing!!! I really love Shawn Lane's music as well, we lost him way too early... also of the same caliber is the legendary Allan Holdsworth... and if you really want to have your brain freaked out at pure technical abilities showcased... get the album featuring the 2 of guitarists I just mentioned, Holdsworth and Gambale, done with MVP (Mark Varney Project) called The Truth in Shredding... http://www.guitar9.com/truthinshredding.html
Gambale has quite a bit of other music.. just google his discography if you are interested... I also like him in Chick Corea's Elektric Band. as well as in Vital Information and GHS.... lets see... some other greats... Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin and Paco Delucia have some awesome collberative music (my fav of these 3 together is Passion, Grace and Fire), as well as many solo albums... especially DiMeola's solo stuff.... Steve Morse's solo work and his stuff with the Dixie Dregs is geat.... Larry Coryell.... Larry Carlton... Lee Ritenour... Pat Metheny... Fourplay is good... some of their albums are with Carlton... some are with Ritenour.... The California Guitar Trio... Eric Johnson (Cliffs of Dover is a classic), Joe Satriani, Joe Stump, Ron Thal (Bumblefoot), Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine, Buckethead, Steve Lukather (former guitarist from the 80's group Toto), Mike Stern, Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech, Stanley Jordan and his work in the band Vertu..... Steve Vai.... G3 is Satriani, Vai, bassist Stu Hamm and they have had Eric Johnson with them, as well as Liquid Tension Experiment's guitarist who's name is escaping me rgiht now.... there is Andy Timmons... Paul Gilbert... Vinnie Moore.... Vitalij Kupriji....

as far as Bass players... I have already mentioned Stu Hamm.. he has a few solo albums out.. fantastic player... also Bass player Bromberg as well as Tony Levin...

I have to also mention banjo jazz fusion (yes, you read that right! lol) band Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.... he has monster bassist Victor Wooten and his rather strange brother, Future man on a funky drum-guitar thing he invented... they also like to have other instrumentalists who do unusual music.... for instance, they have a saxophonist who plays 2 saxophones at a time.... an Eastern Indian percussionists/vocalist and a monk (Tibetan?) who can sing 3 notes at the same time.... be warned, not all his albums are fusion... he also has done quite a bit of bluegrass instrumental stuff, so if you want to hear jazz fusion banjo you will need to check out albums like UFO Tofu, Flight of the Cosmic Hippo or Three Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.... as well as others...

I like smooth jazz/guitar oriented new age a lot... I am in a lot of chronic pain and this kind of music helps me to deal with it when it gets really bad... for the more mellow/sometime ethereal... I like Thom Rotella, Patrick Yandall, Earl Klugh, Tuck Andress, Jeff Golub, Craig Chaquico (former guitarist for Jefferson Airplane), Alex DeGrassi, William Ackerman, Acoustic Alchemy and member Peter White's solo stuff.... Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons, Yellowjackets, Chieli Minucci and Special EFX, Chuck Loeb and 3rd Force, female guitarist Joyce Cooling is.... well... pretty cool too... :) .... Michael Hedges, Norman Brown, Pierre Bensusan, Richard Smith, Strunz and Farah (Strunz is a South American guitar player and Farah is a middle eastern violin player), Tommy Emmanuel... Chris Proctor... so many great guitarists.. so little time and money...!! lol

one Sinatra-like Christian group not mentioned yet is Jason and the G-Men....

some other Christian artists in this genre (guitair oriented)... first and foremost is Phil Keaggy.. he has so much great instrumental music.... if you haven't listened to him... you are missing out on one the greatest guitarists in the world, Christian or not.... a few other good Christian guitarists are Tim Bowman, Jack Jezzro and Eric Essix.... the all instrumental band Fourth Estate are Christians with some great instrumental rock/fusion.... Jeff Sheetz is another great Christian guitarist, I love his cd Woodpecker Stomp.... Lanny Cordola is another excellent Christian muscian... he has some rock/fusion instrumental stuff, as well as more of a straight ahead jazz trio album as well....

hope some of these were people you haven't heard about and encourages you to check out some of their music...

blessings,
Ken
