  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

TO all on this thread, I would encourage you to look at the review from a Christian perspective at pluggedinonline.com. I love to go to the movies, but I have found it helpful to find out the content before going.

According to the reviewer, this movie should have been rated NC 17 because of it's over the top sexual content(including a great deal of nudity) and an abundance of foul language. His words, too many f words to count.

As Christians we should not seek to be entertained by the very sins Christ died for.

A good tip. Check out cleanfilms.com. They edit movies of all nudity, foul language and excessive violence, while leaving much of the content in tact.

Nudity must be put in context. It's not always sinful to have nudity in movies, and I would think that in a boot camp/war situation there could very well be a lot of nudity that is not in a sexual context.
Again according to the reviewer the nudity is sexual in nature. Sex scenes with both male and female nudity. Pornographic in nature. One scene of a man masterbating. Not exactly battlefield nudity.

It's definately an interesting read, but won't stop me from going to the movie. Now that I know what to expect though, I should be fine - I won't likely be surprised or horrified by some of the behaviour.

Then again, looking through the rest of that movie site, seeing it rate Napolean Dynamite as it's #3 movie definately takes away from it's credibility. Worst movie ever...

Well, I saw JarHead and I didn't think the nudity was excessive, it was very minimal. Yeah there was swearing but hey, it's a movie about the military. This is one of the best movies of the year and I recommend checking it out for yourself. It's great because it neither glorifies nor does it criticize the military. Four Stars all the way.

Basically the movie is a true story about a guy who joined the Marines. It's basically about how all the training he had to go through as a Marine, and then all the waiting he had to do during the first Gulf War to use that training. It basically revolves around the training. Yes, there is a lot of swearing, but it's in context. It is mostly about what the life of a soldier was like in the first Gulf War.

I am thinking of going to see it instead of waiting for it to come out on video (I dont do theaters much). I served years ago so am curious if Hollywood got it close enough to be almost reasonably passible in believability (Full Metal Jacket was very good in its Boot Camp sceanario).

btw - the USMC is 230 yrs old this 10 Nov. oooorah.

What an amazing movie. Absolutely stunning. Yes, a lot of swearing, yes, nudity and partial nudity, yes, sex and masturbation...but honestly it's about a group of 20-something Marines. I wasn't expecting the movie to leave these things out and would have felt that it was sugarcoated if they were. The greatest thing I think that this movie does is give me, a civilian, a glimpse of the reality in Iraq. I mean, this movie portrays a war in recent memory. Some of the people that fought there are in Iraq now. This is the most relevent war movie to my own life and times right now that I've seen. There's a good chance I will go to see it again, and I will definitely get the soundtrack. The music and song selection was fantastic.

:) Ashley

BTW...as a gauge of language and nudity...there's no way anyone could edit this movie to avoid those things and still leave any sort of context behind. It is pervasive but that is the reality.

According to the Christian reviewer from the site 4uJesus gave, himself having served in the military, he said that during all his time serving his country, he never saw a group of marines as undisciplined and wild as was depicted in the movie. I didn't see the movie yet, but will be seeing it tomorrow, and I have a feeling it is played up a bit for dramatic effect.

Well I saw it today and the sex scenes weren't as bad as I thought they were going to be. But wanting to kill so badly that you start crying? I found that theme of the movie rather unattractive.

Well, I think that theme of the story was more saying that the mentality of the training led people towards feeling that way and how unhealthy that can be. Unfortunately, that does happen. I think the movie was definitely saying that the aspect of the training is more harmful than good.

Definately a painful, but beautiful, few hours of my life I regret having wasted. My main gripe about the movie was that there definately was a lack of discipline displayed. Now, I don't know how the USMC does things, but I'd like to think that stuff such as fake-orgies in front of TV reporters are punished a little bit more harshly than building a mini-pyramid out of sandbags. Now, from that pluggedinonline.com review, the guy said that the only thing this movie really does is insult the troops. From my perspective, I'd agree with that. I can't think of a single "normal" person in that entire group of Marines - all are bloodthirsty, porn-addicted, and swear more in five minutes than I manage in a day (and I'm not the best example of what not to say in polite company).

People are all so stoked on it being a "real story about the Gulf War!" I still question that evaluation and really am left wondering what the real veterans of that situation think of the movie and the book. Or even Swofford.
