I honestly don't believe that a person should have their home raided and then sent to prison for looking at or receiving child pornography. It'd be different if one was actually producing such, but I just don't like the idea of looking at something being a felony. Technically, under the law, one doesn't even have to have it on their computer, just having it pop up on a browser can send a red flag out to whoever. And that's a breach of privacy.
It's demonized to an extent that no one is going to say anything about it, but if it were anything else this would be a strong cause for concern. Some people have bizarre sexual fantasies, and that's not really anyone's business. It's almost 'though police' like.
I'm not defending child pornography in any way, I'm just sayin.. where's the line between justice and simply locking people away on prejudice?
Anyhow, the sentencing I suppose is about right. Since he was trying to go have sex with a minor- something straight out of Dateline I guess, and then actually going in on a couple others along with having a dubious obsession overall- there really is no mitigation that will suffice. The whole 'he has problems thing' is something they all drop after having been caught, but where in the mind is it dictated that the thing to do is as what he was doing? Was he lonely?
Probably. I personally would've only given him eight years, but that's just me. But to suffice everyone, the judge was inclined to slap him with 15.
Having to register as a sex offender and never be able to be around children, having one's family be ashamed of them- I mean, he's going to spend the rest of his life with it. I don't think people should be concerned about a heavier sentence.
