Let me put this question to my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why was there a need or even a reason to stone someone to death for sinning under the Old Covenant if they had the sacrificial system?

To demonstrate the principle that Christ's sacrifice does not cover willful and unrepentant sins. In fact, if you read the sin offerings for the sanctuary, all of them were offered for sins of ignorance. God made no provision for willful sins.

Hebrews 10
26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Salvation in the OT was by faith but the Grace was missing... that is what Jesus brought through His ministry while on the earth and through His sacrifice. He took on flesh and suffered as we suffer to be able to offer us this compassionate mercy. Not that our sinful nature deserves it but because He is faithful and just....

Grace was extended to us before the world was created (2 Tim 1:9). I agree with DL, sins that were committed willfully were met with death. In other words, only the rebellious were stoned to death.

Abram received grace and became Abraham. Grace is unmerited favor. Every saint in the OT and in the NT were saved under the new covenant of grace by faith.

The old covenant was a provisional covenant, never intended to save. Jesus did not bring in grace by His death, He ratified the new covenant that was instituted after the fall of man. The 5 phases of grace were evident in the old testament sanctuary.

I think it goes a little bit deeper than just willfull sins. There are many people who sin willfully out of weakness. I think it's willfull sins motivated by a proud, rebellious attitude. These people know what they do and do it anyway without remorse or any desire to repent or change. There is no broken or contrite heart. David sinned willfully but a broken and contrite heart came with it.
