  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

how many of you took a pregnancy test and it came up negative even though you later found out you were pregnant?

my friend who just had her baby a couple of weeks ago... when she first took a pregnancy test after she didn't get her period it came up negative and then later found out at the doctors office she was pregnant.. this is the only story i have heard of this happening so im just curious how common this is.......is this something that happens more than i thought .... and why does it come up negative for some if it is positive?

thank you!

For my pregnancy which ended in miscarriage, only the blood pregnancy test came out positive. All 3 pee tests came out negative..that could have been since I was already in the beginning stages of a miscarriage, I don't know.
That is the exact same thing that happened to a good friend of mine.

It's possible to have a false negative, but not usually a false positive. If you feel that you might be pregnant you should go to your doctor and get a blood test done.

It happened to me too, urine test was negative so I went to the dr on the same day and the blood test was positive.
As I understand it, the reason is that once conception occurs, your body starts producing a specific hormone that is only present during pregnancy. The urine and blood tests both test for this hormone. The problem is that the levels are low in the beginning (i.e. around when you miss your period for the first time) and so often the urine test is negative because the levels of the hormone being excreted into your urine are too low to pick up. A blood test is usually more accurate.
About a week after the dr gave me the good news, I did another urine test and it was positive but the line was still very feint.

I had a negative home pregnancy test with my 2nd baby, and a positive urine test later that week at the Dr's office.

I had a positive home pregnancy test with my 3rd pregnancy, then a negative urine test at the clinic, then a positive blood test at the clinic, although I miscarried a few days later.

I didn't bother with the home pregnancy test this time. I still had my period for 3 months after I was pregnant, oddly enough, but my breasts were so huge that it was evident something was going on.

Different tests detect different levels of hormone. Some are more sensitive than others. If a test comes out negative and you suspect you're pregnant, wait a week and try again.

I've never experienced this, when I had my miscarriage I had a faint positive test. But my mom told me that with my oldest brother, she was sick and they thought it was just a stomach bug.. she took HPT's and they said negative and she went to the doctor and they all said she wasn't pregnant.. and even did x-rays on her to find out what was going on... finally they took a blood test and found out she was pregnant. Stupid doctors!!!! Thank God my brother didn't have medical problems after being exposed to those x-rays.

Yay for bumping up old threads ;)

I just wanted to say that I didn't get a positive pregnancy test until 7 days after my missed period. I tested the first day I missed, and the fifth day, and both times it was negative. 7 days after my period was supposed to show I got a positive test so it took me awhile to see the plus sign.

Has your doctor confirmed this as well?

the first one I took was negative, the second was positive, and then the Doc confirmed. BUT, numerous times in my check-ups with my obgyn, when they tested my pee (with the same testing strip we buy at walmart...they don't have anything fancy!), it read as being negative! And there I am, sitting on a table with a 5-pound baby kicking around inside of me! lol....needless to say, I don't have a whole lot of faith in those tests! =)

It's routine for everyone to have a pee test at my doctor's office (they check for EVERYTHING, not just pregnancy). I want to say about 3 or 4 times my test was negative. The first time it scared me a little, the rest of the times we had a laugh over it!

Well, mine hasn't. I haven't even seen the doctor yet and I'm 8 weeks. :p My first appointment isn't for another week and a half, they didn't want to see me sooner.

(oh and I never got any negative results)
I just think it's better to have a doctor confirm that everything is ok when you get negative tests and then a positive. I've known to many women who have had miscarriages after getting several negative tests and then a positive.

She said 7 days late based off of her normal cycle length, being 21 days. But she showed me her chart, and we determined ovulation to be on day 14, and she got a postive test on day 28 which would have only been 14 DPO which is perfectly normal. So really, I wouldn't say she was 7 days late, but had a later ovulation than normal because with a 21 day cycle and normal luteal phase being 12 days (12-16, as short as 10 being okay).... normal ovulation would have to be day 9ish.

So I would say late ovulation, not late test.... so I wouldn't say period was 7 days late before a positive test, but the right amount of time for there to be enough hcg! Howz that for a complex answer.

alright.... questions from a non-pregnant woman here..... if you test in the office and the pee strip says positive do they still have you do the blood test? Is there anyway possible to decline the blood test? Also when going through the pregnancy do they do blood tests offen? If so what all are they for, and can you decline them? Thanks

Regardless, my period *was* late because my cycles are never that long. :) I originally went on the pill because my cycles were anywhere from 18-22 days, usually around 21, and it was getting ridiculous.

I didn't get a positive test until day 28/29 (took it at midnight, so either way) when I should have gotten my period around days 21-23. Even if I should not have expected my period until day 24 (10DPO), I still did not get a positive test right away, it took an extra few days.

What would the doctor be able to do this early besides tell me that I'm pregnant? I'm only 4.5 weeks. I wasn't planning on going in until I was 8-10 weeks. With military doctors, I have to go get the PG test, and once that's confirmed they won't do anything else there -- I have to be sent to the hospital because the regular doctor is not allowed to see me at ALL if I'm pregnant, so even if I go in now, I won't be able to be seen by an OB/GYN for at least a few weeks.

I think the statistics for a positive 10 DPO are only like 70% for most of those early response ones, so its normal not to get one until 13 or 14 dpo.... which is why I was so shocked to get a positive myself so early...

What would be the purpose in avoiding the blood test, should they want to do one? I think most places have "blood work" done the first appointment, not necessarily a pregnancy test but to test for other things... I can't remember what though. Deficiencies and things that are wrong.
