  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

why are more and more people saying prosecute israel for committing war crimes?

because israel doesn't deserve to be prosecuted for committing war crimes because israel doesn't commit war crimes.

There are Palestinian children strewn across the streets of Gaza. Men and women have been slaughtered into the thousands now. War crimes? That is far too polite for the genocide enacted by the Israeli state. Not just over recent weeks, but since its very inception. Hamas is not to blame. The actions of the Israeli state over these past few weeks have shown the world exactly why Hamas exists.

Because of the terrorism and genocidal policies of the Israeli state. And no Catholic in good conscience can support this disgusting campaign. Or I have no shadow of a doubt in my mind that they will answer for it at their Judgement.

what about hamas using its own people as shields, what about the rockets going into Israel, what about the fact that Israel is the only democracy in the area, how many Jews are committing genocide against Christians in iraq non its Muslims, the way things are going Israel will be the only safe haven for Christians in the area.

ps im a catholic and my conscience is clear ....funny i dont know much scripture but im sure that God promised that land to the Jews so you may well have to stand in judgment yourself

Unless you have a night of breaking glass and a holocaust etched into your history you will never appreciate the deep fears of a nation. Israel is surrounded by states and terrorists whose avowed aim is the extinction of the state of Israel and, if possible, ALL of its jewish people. If that is not anti semitism then I am a blue elephant.

It was Hamas who decided to break the recent ceasefire as was always the case. The indiscriminate firing of several thousand rockets a day into an urban area of Israel shows a total lack of any moral conscience, or at least one similar to the State of Iraq terrorists currently slaughtering people in Iraq. If terrorists use their own populations as shields against defensive attack then it is they that are ensuring the deaths of women and children not a nation state attempting to protect its people.

The only way forward is the true catholic way - one of pacifism and negotiation. But is the terrorists see only destruction and terror as the means of achieving its objectives what can be done??

what about hamas using its own people as shields,

Abominable conduct. So the legitimate response is to... blow those civilians away, and a few others besides? "They're hiding behind civilians! Quick! Kill the civilians!" Do not pretend to have any sympathy for their plight.

what about the rockets going into Israel,

Israel is a legitimate target as the aggressive and genocidal state that it is. The Palestinians are justified under Just War doctrine against Israeli terrorism.

what about the fact that Israel is the only democracy in the area,

I don't consider democracy to be anything to write home about, since the majority of Israeli people are celebrating the mass slaughter of women and children, the democracy of Israel is obviously an abuse. Everyone's on the wrong side, and a system of government is allowing it, and it's to be celebrated? Hilarious.

And I ask you, how much has democracy done for that region? Democracy has done wonders for Iraq, right? Wooo! Murica! Yet now we see the results of your bastardised democracy.

how many Jews are committing genocide against Christians in iraq non its Muslims,

And it's Muslims that are sheltering those same Christians that are being saughtered by the terrorists. Terrorists funded by America and Britain. Terrorists given weapons by America and Britain. Israel's best friends.

the way things are going Israel will be the only safe haven for Christians in the area.

Until they start spitting on Christians in the streets again. Until they lift stones and bricks. Please.

ps im a catholic and my conscience is clear ....funny i dont know much scripture but im sure that God promised that land to the Jews so you may well have to stand in judgment yourself

"The Holy Scriptures cannot be used to justify the return of Jews to Israel and the displacement of the Palestinians,” [Archbishop] Bustros said at the close of a two-week conference in Rome, Italy, “to justify the occupation by Israel of Palestinian lands.”

Hamas is indeed deliberately using civilians as a shield.

Israel is the one choosing to shoot those civilian shields Hamas is hiding behind.

2 wrongs don't make a right. Hamas' disgusting acts do not justify Israel's disgusting acts.

If that is not anti semitism then I am a blue elephant.

My family and people were starved from their homes and sent into exile before Adolf Hitler was a twinkle in his father's eye. My family and people have experienced constant, non-stop persecution, both ethnically and religiously, for generations too. I can fully appreciate a sense of that fear. Yet that wouldn't give me any right to pick up a gun and start kicking people's doors in and shooting them as they watch TV or say their prayers.

And I can entirely understand why there is so much anti-Israeli sentiment in the surrounding nations.

Yet Israel is perfectly justified in doing the exact same thing?

The only way forward is the true catholic way - one of pacifism and negotiation. But is the terrorists see only destruction and terror as the means of achieving its objectives what can be done??

Military intervention against the terrorists. Starting with the biggest terrorist operation of them all. Israel.

I blame Hamas since they are the ones who fire their rockets indiscriminately at Israel while using the innocent civilians as human shields. It's part of their suicide "martyr" strategy. The pattern is Hamas sets up a rocket launcher right next to a hotel or other place that has a lot of civilians. They fire rockets into Israel from that spot. Israel gives warning to evacuate civilians before they bomb. Hamas orders the civilians to stay and continues firing rockets into Israel from that location. Israel gets blamed for what results. Hamas sees that their tactic worked for turning people against Israel, so they do it again. Hamas is engaging in human sacrifice because they believe in doing whatever it takes to destroy Israel for Islam. People are basically saying that Hamas should be allowed to fire rockets into Israel which would result in Israeli civilians getting killed. Every country has a right to defend itself from attack. So I don't see how Israel is to blame for Hamas committing human sacrifice.

Israel is to blame because it is still an immoral act on their behalf. If the modus operandi is for Hamas to tell civilians not to evacuate, then that doesn't absolve Israel for its moral culpability in continuing strikes against civilians. I can't hold a gun at someone's head and tell them to duck, and if they don't duck and I fire, be held inculpable for their murder.

Israeli atrocities remain just that. Atrocities. They are not carrying out a legitimate and just war.

Uh, because Israel is the one bombing high density civilian areas with indiscriminate munitions?

If this was just about Israel and Hamas, you'd be right. You seem to be forgetting about the civilian non-combatants that are there.

what a conceited answer when you live in a democracy ...perhaps then while you dont particularity admire the democracy you live in you should go and live in Egypt or any of the other Muslim ruled countries an then we will see how much you value it...but some how i dont think that will happen

Yes I'm from the UK. I've had to experience the pleasures of British culture all my life. From being spat at by Orangemen, to being refused jobs because of my religion, and even places in education. The Catholic religion, that is. I've also had to live with roving gangs of young Muslim men and the sad reality that there are places in my own home town that I can't walk because I'm white and I'm not a Muslim. I trust the BBC and the Daily Mail as far as I trust FOX or whatever other channel you get. Which is to say not at all.

So not I haven't "given in to the Muslim viewpoint." I am exercising my God given conscience and reason in stating that the atrocities of Israel are not justifiable and Catholics cannot in good conscience support them.

You can continue trying to pigeon-hole me all you wish, or dismissing my arguments.

The terrorists in Iraq slaughtering innocent Christians are wrong. The terrorists in Israel slaughtering innocent Muslims are wrong. Geeze, look at that, someone that can weigh each case on an individual basis and make a rational judgement.

SCIM.

Two wrongs do not indeed make a right but I can neither take a violently pro palestinian or a pro israeli stance. To accuse one side only in a conflict like this only serves to reinforce the other into its belief that violence gives some form of gain in world respect. Just do anti British and anti American rants- If Terrorists scent victory through violence they will wind it further as has happened in Syria, Nigeria and Iraq.

Negotiation is the only path but when? Certainly the cry "War Crimes"only serves to hinder the progress of negotiation

I don't see the logic in that. Do you believe that Israel has a right to even exist? Because Hamas doesn't believe this.

I don't see the logic in that.

The Israeli warmachine is fully capable of intercepting those rockets, which they do nine times out of ten. The odd one that gets through rarely if ever results in Israeli casulties, civilian or military. By all means, engage military arguments, but I cannot believe you would sit there and say that Israeli's firing missles into civilians is in any way okay.

I don't see the morality in that.

Right, because the only options are "democracy" or Egyptian anarchy. Poor 15th century France. They were all Egyptians!

Though funnily enough, if one is of Plato's mind, then the current situation in Egypt is exactly what happens with democracy. It seems you are the one that has a lot to look forward to.

The Jewish community has a right to exist in peace and safety. The state of Israel is an entirely different matter. It is an artificial terrorist state created at the whim of western imperialist powers, that has far over-stepped its original constitution. The state has to go if peace will ever be had in the Levant.
