How do you feel about the beliefs of Islam? It makes many claims that it is simply a continuation of Judaism and Christian revelations. In apologetics it gives many examples from the Torah...mostly against the typical Christian beliefs like trinity, Jesus is God, etc. What do you think and how do you refute their interpretations of scripture?

From my experience whilst I respect immensely those who are G-d fearing and practice the religion , I do question some aspects of the religion itself. I've thus far concluded that whilst it makes a good case to be a continuation from the Jewish and Christian revelations there are other aspects of it (namely the Hadeeths which are a collection of books chronicling what Muhammed said and did) which seem to be quite the opposite and condemn Judaism especially but also Christianity. Throughout the Tanakh, G-d has always promised to protect Israel and smite its enemies so I question therefore a 'final revelation' which in effect quotes G-d as a liar by stating that the Jews will instead be destroyed. When read comparatively with the Tanakh, the NT this is where alarm bells go off for me.

In terms of refuting it check out:

www.answeringislam.com

and

www.aboutisa.com - this website was created by ex-Muslims and addresses some aspects of the Quran from an insiders point of view.

Hope this helps

G-d bless

First of all, I would like to say the Trinity is not of a Christian belief, its adopted. Many Christians including myself refuse this Fallacy. As a result, I understand by many people here, I am now outcast and segregated from my Christian Brethren.

I have talked to a few Muslims before. F course there is not much you can do to tell them of their belief, it remains for them to see. From what I believe, is that I believe it not to be a Religion of God, first of all, if this Mohammed guy is a prophet, how many prophets conquered entire regions by the sword? Mohamed conquered the Arabian Peninsula. His successors conquered the Christian Middle East. Around the 8th Century the Muslims had conquered parts of India and North Africa, and had Conquered Spain. After this they Prepared to Conquer all of Europe. it took Spain a long time to finally defeat the Spanish Moors who had conquered them.

Its not for me to judge any Muslim or state how Religious they are. However, one I spoke to, went as far as to tell me no Christian can go to heave because they can’t recognize the antichrist, only Muslims can, and as a result, only Muslims will be protected. One I spoke to, also denied some of the things spoken of Jesus, and denied the Book of Revelation. He said Jesus is Peace which so any judgment type aspect of Jesus, is not Jesus but false

And many such things as this

Thanks for the links Lotuspetal. Although I'm of the opinion the first site was a bit trite in its answers, it did give good biblical refutes in the debate section.
Sojeru..what is a yeshiva anyway? I know simchat said he was studying at one so I'll have to ask where he goes (hey neighbor! :) )

Hi Catherine,

You're welcome.

Here's another link as well (I'd forgotten to include this in my last post):

http://debate.org.uk/topics/apolog/home.htm

I'm more into this website especially the apologetics, theological and history sections. Although as Sojeru said, first we need to fully, more deeply understand what we have first as a lot of what Islam teaches against our faith is based on the mis-teachings contained within Christianity.

blessings be to HaShem in his compassion and mercy, who remembers the merit of our fathers and in remeberance of Messiah bestows that forgiveness upon us; master and king of the universe and of creation.

Hi cbrickell,

A yeshiva is a school that teaches from pre-basics through the extremely complicated (knock your socks off) teaching of the faith. Though it may be Orthodox, their teaching is true.
A person who engages themselves in a full emmersed study of the things being taught at a Yeshiva, will no doubt, be able to refute the claims of any false teaching- in this case and your case of interest- Islam.

and what was that about "hey neighbor" ( im thinking it was meant for simchat) i didnt understand that at all. lol

Sojeru basically summed up what a Yeshivah is, but I'll add just a few more words:
Consider a seminary... now multiply its requirements by about 5.... then add in very indepth Hebrew and Aramaic study... then toss in Judiac studies (mishnah, talmud, midrashim, rabbinical literature, etc)... and a good deal of history classes (Isreali history, Jewish history, etc)...
it really boils down to this: its where one studies to become a Rabbi. Typically it lasts about 7 years or so, and you will work at a synagouge your last year as an assistant Rabbi or as a Rabbi of a small community congregation. While the majority of Yeshivot are Orthodox, there are conservative and even reform out there as well. This is somewhat of a cheesy comparison as a seminary compared to a Yeshivah is like comparing grade school to college.

I won't say here in public forums where I attend school (secular or otherwise, though I will discuss what degrees I hold, etc), but I will say that I have taken classes through 2 different online messianic Yeshivot and through 1 non-messainic Yeshivah (conservative... and out of state). I have taken these classes purely for personal pleasure and personal growth... I'm not interested in receiving a simcha (rabbinical certification). That, and in order to go much further I'd have to take a lot more Hebrew... something which I'm quite pathetic at. :(

Had there been an Orthodox Yeshivah closer to where I live I would have taken numerous other classes.

In person I can tell you more about where I've studied. Hehe... I try to keep a bit of distance between my personal life and my online life, though I am pretty open about a lot of it. Basically, I don't want any psycho hunting me down, stalking my wife, or what not. I probably tell too much about who I am, etc, but for the most part I trust the people at the forums I visit. I just want to keep the harassment in 'real life' to a minimum. I'm sure that Rabbi Cohen has experienced a good number of antagonists in his life. I've also seen it happen to other online friends and Rabbis. Its just a personal choice I've made to keep my identity somewhat hidden.

Of course, if someone is determined enough, you can find out just about anything about anyone.

Anyway, just wanted to make a few comments Catherine. By the way, we should get together for coffee again sometime. Drop Ana and I a call sometime. ;) Maybe we can go to schul sometime soon?

Shalom,
Yafet.

There have been a few, if only I had a penny...

I think your Hebrew is quite good actually. Remember it isn't like learning quantum physics, or worse - Dreamweaver. The more time you spend with it the easier it becomes.

Kol Tuv,
Rabbi Cohen

p.s., speaking of dreamweaver, I have a question for you, but I will email it.
