  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How ya doin my friend? Headed your way this weekend. I'm getting cold already.

Ok. Let me pose a question. Why is that you want to make sure the message of sin is preached? What is so wrong with psychology in preaching? I do not think the central message of the gospel is sin. Why should we make it ours?

Go cards
Psychology preaching teaches people to find fault elsewhere, that they are the victim, like I said earlier to many push people into believing they are deprived instead of depraved... Maybe you aren't an advocate of total depravity which would explain alot...But I think you are...so my view shouldn't be that difficult to understand.

The marks of the true church

-One
-Holy
-Catholic
-Apostolic

If the church lacks any one of those four then its message is irrelevant as it is an invalid church.

hmmm. let me think about that one . . . ok. moving on.

Hey Kristos.

I can see your point but I wouldn't equate relevance with worldliness. To me, relevance is bringing in elements that help people understand the message. Those may come through the arts, through wording or phrasing that people can understand, media, music, dance, etc. I don't know what the statistic would be, but I do not think if you told a group of unchurched college kids that they need to die to the world -- what their reaction be? For most, turned off immediately. Confusion, they wouldn't understand that terminology. so the challenge is to speak the truth in a language they understand.

You might be surprised. The intrigue of such a "rebellious" statement might be irresistible.

I do like your line about deprived vs. depraved. of course i'm totally depraved! you're totally depraved. wouldn't like to be totally depraved too. sorry.

there is a balance to be sure. too much psych and you water it down. all bible with no understanding of how the mind and heart work and you lose people there as well.

but about the sin thing. Do you think Jesus came down hard on the sinners he hung out with? they seemed to really enjoy his presence. can't imagine they would if he were constantly condemning sin in them.

Do you also approve of billboards up and down the interstate that usually preach against divorce and adultery?

Go Cards

No. There is no followup, no discipleship. The message isn't preached in entirety. If your foundation isn't solid, neither is your faith.

LOL! Sorry. Let me explain. I work in a Prison, and on Mondays the Creek Nation have a group that comes to teach Native American youth about their culture and "spiritual" practices. It has supposedly been a positive influence in regards to recidivism and re-offender rates. "I" have a problem with a Christian "Chapel" being used to bang drums and burn sage.

Do you think liturgical services are more scriptural?

I decided to start watching more Christian television than I used to, to be fair, I've even watched EWTN a few times. I watched a mass a couple of times. It's a very elaborate and eye pleasing affair, however, I didn't understand a word that was said. How does one learn or benefit from that?

This is not a debate on services. I grew up in a Brethren church and spent nearly 10 years in a non-denomination one. I prefer the reverence and worship that is experienced through liturgy. It's a structured service with scripture that is tied to the message and hymns. I was referencing what is preached. A person's walk in faith is strengthened by scriptural knowledge. Why else would we read the Bible? Surely not to know and understand more. Perhaps it's just to feel good.

As I said, if you were never told you were a sinner, how would the message of Christ benefit you?

Not sure. I do know some who do understand it and to them it's very life giving. May their tribe increase! However, for those who don't, I do not feel it's wise to force everyone into the same fundamental mold.

I had never watched that show until Saturday night from a hotel room when I was flicking the channels.
It had Scot Hahn being interviewed and the first time I have ever seen him on the tele......seems he converted to the "other side" awhile back :D

If it relates to the Gospel, you know "praise and worship," that's great! I attend a Pentecostal Church, we have a piano, drums, guitars, organ, and lot's of music. We put our hands in the air and sing, sing, sing . . . . . . My sister-in-law plays the drums. My sister, an ordained minister, is Christian rock all the way.

My part about the drums and sage was really "irrelevant." ;)

I understand what you are saying. The gospel includes an understanding of one's sinful condition. However, sin is not the only message. And I am not suggesting that relevant preaching dismisses sin. It deals with it but in different terms or ways or methods, perhaps. I know many people who have been driven away from Christ because the church harped on sin too much and not enough on living the life God meant for you to live.
