I visit my brother who has severe autism usually once a week at his care center, and a year and a half ago he tried to squeeze my iPhone as hard as he possibly could putting pressure on it as if to try to bend it. At that time I asked the Apple store and my brother's care center and they both told me that it is possible that he could break the screen if he tries to do this. At the Apple Store, I re-enacted how my brother put pressure on the screen without putting nearly so much pressure, and they said he could crack the screen.
More recently I have switched to an expensive Samsung Galaxy phone that sells for about $1000 (though I bought it on sale). When I was discussing my special needs brother with the Samsung representative at the store, she told me that cracking the screen isn't the only concern, but in putting that much pressure on the screen, there could be concern that it could affect the sensors in the touch screen as well.
So my question is, would using my Galaxy Watch with my brother instead of the Galaxy Phone, be a safer alternative? One of my friends gave me a Galaxy Watch Gear 4 Classic for free because he had an extra one. The phone costs $1000 to replace, whereas the watch only costs $300 to replace. However the watch has a glass screen too, and sensors in the touch screen, so could the watch break too? It is not the Galaxy Watch Ultra so it is not as indestructible. On a visit to my brother, I would keep the phone hidden and use the watch to make phone calls. Sometimes I have to call to get help from a caregiver or call for them to open his cottage. I could even go as far as to pay for a cellular plan on the Galaxy Watch, so I could leave my phone in my car.
Somehow I don't think it is very likely my brother would push on the watch as hard as he can, because I had a traditional watch that he saw a few times before, and he did not do this to it. As far as the phone goes, with the iPhone it was rare that he would squeeze it as hard as he can, because I used it a few times with him at later times and he did not squeeze it like he once did. So I kind of wonder if I am worrying too much to go to great lengths to keep my Galaxy phone away from him. I also wonder if the phone screen might be more rugged than I think. I do not pay for any accidental damage protection. If my brother would try to put pressure on my devices, I think being out $300 is better than $1000.
