• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Is this type of drinking bad?

I'm 16, but I don't think that would make a difference. Despite it being against the law I'm pretty sure God sets no age limits for when something is okay.
But every now and then if I'm with a friend we may have a few drinks. Just some wine or liqueur drinks, never beer. Through my probably 2 years of drinking I've only been a little drunk about 5-7 times, never really bad drunk (I could at least stand, walk, and wasn't passing out).
Same thing with smoking, except I'll only smoke cigars or Black&Milds. And with smoking I only do it as rarely as i drink, which is probably at the most 2 times a month.

Quitting wouldn't be much of an issue. I've always had a high tolerance against pure pressure when it comes to stuff like that. I just wanna know exactly how bad it is to be doing those things.

I don't know about where you live, but here in Illinois you're breaking the law.

Smoking, you have to be 18, drinking age is 21.

If you get caught you're busted. If an adult gets caught buying it for you, he/she gets busted, has to pay a fine and may serve some jail time. A storekeeper who sells you alcohol may lose his license and serve time and have to pay a fine. If you're in my house and I serve you alcohol, and get caught, I go to jail and pay a fine.

Is that bad enough or do you want it to be worse? Slow down, underage drinking is no joke. You'll have time when you're legal to drink. In the meantime, read up on some of the alcoholism literature and realize how many of them started out this way and never thought it would happen to them.

I agree very much so with mjmcmillan, although that really didn't stop me. It made me feel like an adult, and made it much more intriguing getting away with it.
Well that is what I thought right?
I am a recovering drug addict/alcoholic almost died too. So with that said I really don't have to tell you too much of the in-between except that your story sounds a lot like mine at 16 years old and addiction doesn't care who you are.
You have a great mind, keep it strong by not doing drugs and alcohol. You can still have fun with out it.

In my day, and probably BlessEwe's and mj's, a cop catching you smoking or drinking underage would probably confiscate whatever you had and let you off with a stiff warning. Nowadays, in more and more jurisdictions, it's a mandatory arrest and court filing, likely with a stiff fine on adjudication.
I happen to think the old way made more sense. The cops could always bust you if you didn't get the message first time or two.
Problem is, I don't make the laws. The whole thing just ain't worth the hassle, so cool it 'til you're of age.

In some European Countries they have less of a drinking problem as alcohol is available for those under 18 (Sorry but here it is 18, other Provinces are 19 and the States are 21). Anyways, I personally do not believe alcohol hurts one in moderate amounts, I was allowed to have a drink at certain family get togethers as a teenager and I remember having half a glass of "Baby Duck" as a child at Xmas...that said, I do not think it is appropriate to be drinking with friends (unless your at home and with your parents consent and knowledge).
Did you know btw that having one or two drinks here and there is much wiser than gettiing plastered as when one does get plastered the effects stay with you for a month, effects your memory and critical thinking process :)
As for smoking, I am a smoker and smoking is one of the worst things you could do to your body!! Smoking actually ages you faster (will show on your face), not to mention the effects smoking has on your lungs, heart etc!! Please please do NOT smoke!! IMO and MOO the govt should make smoking illegal...:)

a lot of us "started " out that way. makes you feel older, you can control it, etc.

you are young enough and smart enough to use a computer, that you can educate yourself and make more mature choices NOW.

learn form others mistakes and the voice of EXPERIENCE.

the way i look at it, you have a fork in the road and you must make a choice about which way to go.

one road, takes you down the road a lot of have gone on and it aint so good even if it starts out fun. and you wont be aware of the other road you could have taken.

the other road, you can see the people that took the wrong road and be aware of both roads. and be happy and know that you took the right one.

Though in South Africa it legal to drink-drive and smoke when your 18.

It may not be too bad on you now, but trust me, it'll get worst. If you keep going you'll eventually find it addicting. You'll soon lose friends (because of your drinking behavior), may wind in jail (for disorderly conduct or drunk in public), and maybe have some health problems.

It's best that you quit now and never touch it again. And if you believe in God (or whatever Higher Power you believe in), it's a good idea to never touch it again. Most religions/beliefs are totally against the use of alcohol.
