• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

You absolutely can. Grief can be felt over any number of situations, and not just for people who have died.

In my worst OCD moments, I have grieved my husband's death, and he is alive and healthy. I was grieving in anticipation of the time when he is gone.

I grieved my father when he was sick with colon cancer, well before he died.

I am right now grieving the loss of a friendship I held dear to me and is now gone for reasons not made clear to me. My friend is alive, but our friendship is not, and I grieve the loss of her in my life.

It's perfectly natural for you to grieve your mom, especially if you are needing a mom right now. You were cheated out of having a mother in times of need, and you are grieving that loss.

I'm sorry. :(

Lovely Miss Jo,

I agree with the snooch-meister but of course we are friends.

My mom is mentally ill (bipolar) and refused to seek help, and in her manic moments she would beat us. My dad is an alcoholic who ran away from the mental illness and drank himself numb to not have to face it. And they are BOTH alive and I mourn!

I never had a mom who nurtured me. I never had a dad who loved me enough to defend me. I had these people who biologically donated materials and then just weren't there. And I mourn! When they die I do not know how I'll feel or if I'll even mourn then--maybe some--but I know that now, while I'm alive and so are they and they have missed out on so much of the good stuff that is me and my life...I mourn the loss.

So it's natural lovely Jo. What you are feeling I think is a normal feeling mourning the loss of what you wish you had.

Yes you can grieve the loss of someone who still is alive. Especially with your Nan being gone. This year you need a maternal figure. It is ok to feel the loss of both these important women in your life.

I'm praying that the Lord reaches out in comfort for you.
