I think that Fred Phelps and the congregation of his church (Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS) are a little off their rocker! If you don't know who he is, please do a google search. I am sorry but I am somewhat computer illiterate and can't figure out how to attach any link! Take pity on me.

Although they are making a point about some things that rightly are against God's word, I do not think that their style is going to win any souls for Christ. IMO it just shows Christians as meanspirited and hateful. Your thoughts.....:)

I don't have an opinion yet. I've heard of him but don't know much. I'll try finding out. I will say though that I think we (Christians) often get a bad reputation by other Christians and non-believers for sticking up for God's Word and for everything which is moral. Personally, I could care less what other people think. We should be making a stand even if it's an unpopular one.

Well, I shouldn't say too much more since I haven't read anything yet. I'll check it out and get back to this thread. :)

After doing a search, I know what you're talking about now. I ran across this website not too long ago. I wasn't sure if it was absolutely real or a parody like the Landover Baptist Church thingy. If it's real...then I thank God for the Holy Spirit for leading me into being able to distinguish truth from rubbish. :) I think the feeling you have is of disgust that people could preach like this. I know I do. Like I said, the Holy Spirit will let you know truth from rubbish.

I looked up this stuff and the biggest thing I found weird is that as baptists(at least anabaptists), we tend to lean toward a definite separation of church and state. We love it that way, we know they can't marry each other. They would be unequally yoked (church and state).

This site was very busy trying to make the govt. adopt laws and punishment. I guess they don't realize that govt. isn't christian (as a whole) and shouldn't be considered as such.

The stuff was pretty harsh though.

I agree that their theology (or lack thereof) is based on very bad interpretation. This si what happens when you take one or two verses and base a theology on incorrect interpetation of it. They completely ignore the fact that we are all sinners and depraved, and that God loves us all despite our sin. Pretty sick church.

OP- yeah- it is very good to be judgemental against this... anyone that tells you that you are judging is correct!

The following are some pictures of congregational children! Aren't they just cute? You just wanna pick 'em up and hug 'em.

Yes, I totally agree that they are deranged in their actions. I was shocked to find out that they call themselves Baptist, let alone Christian! I also am a Kansan and it makes me sad to think that people might equate all Kansas Christians as some sort of hateful and ugly religious fanatics! I actually heard someone on the news refer to these people as "very fundamental Christians". I am quite sure that is not an accurate description of their beliefs!!

I just don't see how people could think that showing that something is against God's word in this fashion would ever think that it is bringing glory and honor to God.

Fred and his gang have been around a long time. While they're most known for their outspokenness on gays and government (they also protest military funerals), they get in more trouble, I've heard, by filing frivolous lawsuits and fraudulant leins.

I had heard of them before since I live in Kansas (and living 8 years in Colorado), but most recently I saw something about them protesting at a military funeral as you mentioned. I think that it is disgraceful that anyone would protest at a soldiers funeral, after all they are defending our rights. As for the frivolous lawsuits, I read something that said they are fighting the state of Kansas because they want to erect some sort of monument next to a Ten Commandments monument in Junction City (I think). Their monument is planned to say their little catch phrase about homosexuals (God Hates ....) and have stick like figueres of men on it and I won't go into how they are positioned. They truly seem to be sick to me and I tend to think that it even may go so far as to be termed a cult? It's just very sad.

A little off their rocker? I don't even think that these guys are Christians. Jesus says that Christians will bear good fruit. Phelps hasn't done that, so I have no reason to consider him a brother (maybe he is, but that's for God to decide; I don't have the advantage of knowing his true spiritual state). I think the best thing to do is ignore him, and to ostracize him from the church. Perhaps he'll repent.

Christians do bear good throat. And wouldn't do that at all. Wouldn't agree with the sin but would nonetheless, love the sinner. Because that is what God did!

Well, I was trying to be somewhat nice in how I referred to them in the first post. That said, you are absolutely right on with your post. As I do not know this mans heart per se, we can rightly say that he has not borne any good fruit from these actions. I guess your post is what brings me to my next thought on this. I would tend to think that we should ignore him and not bring any attention to his actions. I am wondering though, do you guys feel that as Christians we are supposed to call out one that is stating himself as Christian but doing things that are just so against showing Christ's love even to those who may be engaging in a sinful action? Aren't we still to show God's love to them even if we disagree with their actions?

I agree that we should love Fred Phelps. The best way to love him is to expel him from the congregation until he repents. Saint Paul said that we should expel the immoral brother. Thus, it's proper for us to hand Phelps over to Satan so that he learns not to blaspheme.

Well as I said above, the Bible tells us that excommunication is a loving act. I certainly agree that we shouldn't hate Phelps. But we must hate what he does.

I guess I didn't state my point very welll on my last post. I totally agree with your stance that he and his supporters should be rebuked by the Christian community. I meant to show the error of his lack of love shown toward others. You are right, we are still called to love him and his followers even though they are doing these despicable things. Sometimes it is pretty tough though, huh?:sigh:
