I believe that lying is a sin, no matter what. The first thing people who disagree usually ask me is, "What if thugs were at your door asking if your family was home in order to kill them - would you lie to save your family?" or similar questions involving murderers, Nazis, lawyers, etc. The second question is usually, "What about police and military who lie in order to stop crime or end wars, gaining advantage through deceit?"
My answer is the same for both questions - first, these hypothetical questions are impractical and inapplicable to my own life, so I can't give you a first-hand experience type of answer. Second, lying is called a sin in the Bible and there are no exceptions to the rule. Therefore, the answer is always yes, lying is a sin. Third, by the grace of God, we are offered forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ. Lying may be the best thing to do in our mind, but that does not make it righteous. No one would ever be put in such a situation if there hadn't been other sinful factors involved. This is just a reminder of the sinful world that we live in. Would lying be justified in heaven? The Bible says that God, who is holy and righteous, cannot lie.
The third question that gets asked is "what about Rahab/Abraham/Hebrew midwives who lied?" Upon closer study of these passages, I have concluded that these people were commended for their faith, not for lying. Again, it only highlights the sinfulness of the world and the grace and mercy of God towards those who have faith in Him.
