In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

no. that's not biblical, and that's not what God wants! I want to remind you of 1 Peter 2:11-12:
(11) Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. (12) Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

so don't be like the rest of the world - and secondly, read up on Philippians 4:8:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.

do you really think that marilyn manson is "noble", "right", "pure" or any of the other attributes listed above? i certainly don't think so, and i'm sure God doesn't either.

so, no, i'm afraid that you should NOT just "listen to what you want" - you need to watch what you're listening to.

i don't quite agree with you. i know some christians are stronger than others, but *everyone*, even the strong christians, are affected. it might not be apparent, but it affects you. i know from personal experience. it's not all evident on the outside, but often you start thinking like the people you're hanging out with - things like swearing become "acceptable".

as for conviction, the very first place you ever look for advice is the bible. if, and only if, you cannot find anything concrete there (which is highly unlikey), then do you revert to your convictions and your conscience.

i feel what music God has in mind for me and what not.

never ever "feel" - *always* look to the factual truth: the bible.
feelings are emotions, which come and go. you should not base anything on how you feel, but rather base what you do on what the bible says.

Depends why you listen and how you look on it I think. Take say the band Emperor, they have some pretty bad lyrics, also not so bad, some even some of best I've ever seen. But musicly they are SO brilliant, and I can thank and praise the lord of giving them the creativity to make it, even if they use it in a bad way. God still gave them the talent, satan can not create, he can only destroy and corrupt.
I'd say if you feel that it's standing in between you and god and you're growing away from God because of it don't listen to it. I also just find it handy when I'm talking to non christian metalheads, cause if you've never listened to the secular bands they'll just laugh at you and not take you seriously, so I also listen to some bands to 'be up to date' so to speak. Which in turn opens up possibilities to share christian bands and my faith with them, if you show you are genuoenly interested in them they'll see that.

I am finding myself not liking secular music as much anymore. Instrumentals is good for me, but otherwise...no.

there is heaps of music you shouldnt listen too.
Music is a powerfull weapon, thats why we use it in church..
anything that is promoting bad image, hatred, crime...
they all feed your mind with words that can pull you down and make you think worse of yourself and the world. No wonder people can get so screwed up...singing songs like that of eminem, even PINK. but dont worry that doesnt restrict you much. there are still HEAPS of encouraging music out there, and some very cool christian bands that i believe are better sounding than most secular

It does matter what type of music it is, it does even matter about the lyrics.

If you can listen to a Slayer song in spirt and truth than go for it, but chances are you won't be able to bring glory to God.

Music should help you become closer to God.

Listen to the music you like, get pumped, jump up and down, do whatever, if you can find meaning in that song that brings pleasure to God and draws you closer, God loves that.

People talk about certian beats being hypnotic, but if it draws you closer

Everyone gets different meanings out of songs.

I say you should be able to listen to whatever music you want to. Who cares if there is swearing or whatever in the lyrics. Not everything needs to can bring glory to god (whatever that means) I listen to Eminem and other rappers, and it doesn't influence me at all, I'm still the same. If the type of music is your style, then listen to it! Don't listen to people that tell you that once you become a Christian you gotta listen to only Christian music and stay away from secular music. Yeah, I'm gonna get insulted for this post, but I don't care. I'm standing up for my beliefs, so there.

One more thing....I don't think that when we die, God is going to say "Well, you followed Me and obeyed all of my commands, loved me, and trusted me, but since you bought an Eminem CD, I can't let you into Heaven"

I belive that we can listen to whatever we want to without limits, AS LONG as we keep God first in our lives and follow Him. If we do all that, then musical choice doesn't really matter that much, as long as you focus on what's REALLY important.

is it possible that you people are misinterpreting the lyrics to some of songs you're speaking of. for instance. the band TOOL has been called satanic from their first release. they are not, however, satanic at all. do you undestand how misinterpretations arise?
