  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is there any music you shouldn't listen to?

Rom. 14,23 outtake.. "For everythin witch is not out of faith, is sin."
if you can say that you can listen to secular music and fully glorify God with what you are doing, than it is nothing wrong with it. although i have a hard time believeing that you can listen to something that talkes against the word of God, out of faith..

personally i've almost stopped to listen to secular music, because there is so much great christian music. why listen to something that can draw you further away from God, when you can listen to something that can draw you nearer?

just remeber, if you are in doubt about what you are doing is wrong, and you still do it, whay you do will become a sin. (look up the whole verse!! romans 14,23)
God bless!
People sing "Above All" all the time without even thinking about how much they are blaspheming. So obviously, it isn't only non-christian songs that can be bad to input into yourself but supposed "christian" ones as well.

I think we really need to look at the lyrics of a song and decide whether or not it is good. So yeah...I agree with you pretty much.

i think you should listen to what you want, you dont have to believe what they are saying
I have to disagree with you there. First of all God tells us not to behave as the world. Second, you dont know how music can affect you, even if you dont believe what they are saying. either way, what they say can affect you subconsciously, even if you dont believe in it. And i hope you have heard of backmasking. (if not, let me know, and i will explain..)

We never know what kind of spirits that can be connected to a song, if the Holy Spirit is not present. And the Holy Spirit can not "be in a song" that talks against the word of God.
Music effects us more than we like to believe, so be careful!
God Bless!

i am obsessed with christian music and proud of it, well maybe not obsessed, but ya know i get all excited and hyped up about every song i hear on klove/refuge/KTIS (christian radio stations in my area). i listen to everything from bebe and cece winans to skillet. i choose to listen to this, because it is positive, encouraging, challenging, and you learn more about jesus. i know i have learned A LOT o good stuff from this music. i do believe when you sing or play music, you should really mean it, and not do it half-heartedly. and i can dance silly for jesus, and i'm not afraid to sing for jesus at the top o my lungs cuz i believe the words are true and God-given!! i love singing for jesus and learning more about him and i'm so thankful for music and being able to rejoice in song. ;)

Psalm 33
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD , you righteous;
it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
2 Praise the LORD with the harp;
make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
3 Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.
4 For the word of the LORD is right and true;
he is faithful in all he does.

Psalm 40
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
1 I waited patiently for the LORD ;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD .

I would love to..

Ephesians 5:19
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

If you look up the word spiritual in the dictionary you will find this definition:
  1. Of, relating to, consisting of, or having the nature of spirit; not tangible or material.
  2. Of, concerned with, or affecting the soul.
  3. Of, from, or relating to God; deific.
  4. Of or belonging to a church or religion; sacred.
  5. Relating to or having the nature of spirits or a spirit; supernatural.
Did that explain it?

Hmm. Well, first thing I'll note, "spiritual songs" are only one kind of songs listed.

Secondly, you will be hard pressed to find a Bible scholar that would equate a "spiritual song" as being a song with the Holy Spirit "in it." If you do some studying, it appears a "spiritual song" is a song that speaks about spiritual things.

I listen to mostly secular music but there are a lot of songs and bands I will not listen to. Even two songs by my favorite band, I refuse to listen to because they do NOT glorify God, in fact they do the opposite. I do not need those messages in my head. Many secular songs are purely secular, they don't really mention God, whether in a positive or negative light. Others have some definitely spiritual, God-seeking undertones and these are great. But some bands are definitely anti-Christian, and why would I want to listen to something like that?

Music has a deep effect on the soul, I believe this with all of my heart. Because sometimes some part of a song, even a single perfectly placed note, will just blow you away. It really goes down and touches the deep part of your soul. Now if this is from an anti-Christian band, well I will not want that spirit getting anywhere near my soul.

I also don't listen to songs which actively promote hedonism and self-glorification. I used to be really into rap but I dont listen to it that much anymore. So many of the songs either glorify and promote violence, extramarital sex, looking at women like objects instead of our sisters, and illegal drug use. I do not want these messages running around in my subconscious.

Just like I will not drink spoiled milk or eat rotten meat, I will not listen to songs that promote anti-Christian things because both instances are simply not healthy for the body or soul.

Its really a personal judgement call. When I listen to a song, I think, if Jesus was here listening to this with me, would I want to play this for Him? Would He enjoy it? If the answer is no, then there is absolutely no reason to listen to it.

The expresson i used "be in a song" was maby kinda vague. What i meant was that some songs call upn the lord, or are shaped as prairs and similar.

Matthew 18
20For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them

It is obvious that if the song speaks agianst the word of God, and pretty much does the opposite of glorifying Him, then we, as christians, should not listen to it.

When I listen to a song, I think, if Jesus was here listening to this with me, would I want to play this for Him? Would He enjoy it? If the answer is no, then there is absolutely no reason to listen to it.
Well said!
God bless!

If you're a Christian, you shouldn't listen to music with antichrist or blasphemous lyrics because it's not about whether it effects YOU or not because it DOES effect GOD.

How can a Christian enjoy antichrist or blasphemous lyrics? that's like hating your own Father or savior or master and loving the opposite.

I only listen to Christian music because I love the lyrics, it's all about God and glorifies God.

That's my preference though, I might just be more zealous.

I would like to encourage people to read all the posts in a thread, please, before they post any reply, so we dont have to repeat ourselves..
But the music can effect your relationship with God. It does not 'affect' God in that sence. Guess you meant that.. :)
God bless!

But we have to remember that not only the lyrics, but also the music videos affect us. It could be an "innocent" love song, with a highly unmoral music video!
A god rule of thumb: Never listen to pop.
If its christian, there is nothing wrong with it.. :)
