  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Some single christians have said that we,as christians should not listen to romantic songs. My two questions are. What is wrong with listenting to romantic songs? What is the difference between romantic songs that we hear today and the words in the Song of Solomon? True,we are not supposed to have sex outside of marriage. What is wrong with that Marvin Gaye song,"Let's Get It On",if a husband is singing that song to his wife?
For example,in the Song of Solomon, chapter 7,verses 6-8,a man is saying this to his lover.(King James Version) "How fair and how pleasant art thou,O love, for delights! This thy statue is like a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes. I said,I will take hold of the boughs thereof
;now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples."
Now,some words from the song by the Steve Miller Band,"The Joker" are this:
" Your're the cutiest thing that I ever did see
I really love your peaches
wanna shake your tree
lovey dovey, lovey dovey all the time
(wolf whistle)
come on baby
I'll show you a good time"
These two songs are essentially saying the same thing.
My question is.What is the differnce?

This is just my first thought, but I feel Song of Solomon depicts the life of marriage in its words & lyrics, whereas I don't think Steve Miller Band is trying to say it's just about married couples or soon to be married couples on a biblical Christ-like standpoint, I know nothing about the song, but I assume he could mean one night stands, adultery ect... All of Song of Solomon is depicting the love between man and wife or soon to be, it's a good study for soon to be married couples.

What is wrong with that Marvin Gaye song,"Let's Get It On",if a husband is singing that song to his wife?

I don't think it's wrong, they're married, but if singles sang it to each other out of wedlock in a fashion that they were intending to act on it, that would be a sin. You can enjoy the music, just as a single Christian, it's sinful to live by the lyrics.

But in light of the topic, I think what it boils down to is Grace. Secular/romantic songs are of this world, and God put us here to be in the world but not of the world. (I believe that's somewhere in the Matthew-John area.) The sin behind secular songs is not the song, but the thoughts that enter our mind from them. As long as we have God in our hearts I don't find it wrong that we listen to some of Etta's "At Last" or The Veronica's "Untouched", as long as you have God in your heart and your listening to him when/if he tells you that those songs are a struggle point for you spiritually.

I hope this helps your understanding, by apologies if I misread the question.

No, you did not misread the questions. You got my point that romantic songs in themselves are not bad. they are perfectly ok for married couples.
