  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is the old covenant in effect?

Is the old covenant in effect?
The real question in my mind is whether the law talked about in Jer 31 is the same law. The new covenant isn't totally in effect yet because it says in those days "no one shall teach his neighbor." However, there are plenty of verses in the new testament talking about it starting to go into effect or that there's a partial giving of the holy spirit which precedes the fullness of the new covenant 2 Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:14

31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

35 Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun for a light by day,
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,
Who disturbs the sea,
And its waves roar
(The Lord of hosts is His name):

36 “If those ordinances depart
From before Me, says the Lord,
Then the seed of Israel shall also cease
From being a nation before Me forever.”

37 Thus says the Lord:

“If heaven above can be measured,
And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,
I will also cast off all the seed of Israel
For all that they have done, says the Lord.

EDIT: it seems pretty obvious to me that it is the same law. It's just being written on our hearts now by God while in Deuteronomy it told us to write the law on our hearts. However, we failed at that so God is doing it for us in the new covenant :)

The thing with the old covenant as revealed in the New Testament is that it was ineffective because it required a standard of righteous living that no one has attained to. The main use of the old covenant is to reveal people's sinful nature.

"Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." Rom 3:20

Gal 3:10-12 "For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them."

Actually no. The Old Covenant was faulty because it was based on man made promises as Hebrews said. The people promised God that they would live by all his words. God gave his commands, they made the covenant to live by them. The issue was never the commands, but their promise. So this idea that God instituted the old covenant just to show mankind that they cannot be perfect is not true neither necessary. Also, the sacrificial system that was a part of it, so they could atone for their sins contained imperfect shadows which all pointed to Jesus Christ. The old covenant did not reveal man's sinful nature, it was because of man's sinful nature.

understanding the old covenant and new covenant is not easy

a few important doctrines:
- old covenant is not necesarilly the OT( as some wont to think the NT is more inspired than the old testament.
- when they say old covenant in hebrews and NT they are talking about the covenant God made with Moses...read Galatians 3:15-18
- the LAW/torah and Old Covenant are the same terms
- however the principles of the law predated Moses....muder..sabath..

the New covenant was promised from Adam, Abraham and seedline.
this New Covenant predates, precedes and is only way of atonement

- most important sign of the New covenant is to be filled with the Spirit/it is not an outward sign but faith hope and love.
2 corinthians 1:22
his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit,

Jeremiah 31:31
covenant written on our hearts.....
Paul called this the law of the Spirit
romans 8:2

- you can be a church going christian, go to a NT church read the NT
babtized and mentally believe in the New Covenant

but still in a since be walking under the law.....
that is specifically what happened in Romans but especially Galatians

if you are following rules and regulations only ...and really not listiening to the LOrd with a solid prayer life.....
you are still under law
galations 3:1-5

Is the old covenant in effect?
Yes and no
Jesus fulfilled the law....so where is the Law fulfilled? In Jesus Christ. WE NOW uphold the law when we are obedient to Christ.

It's not in effect because Jesus died for the consequences of sin...
But it is in effect in how we can relate to God
The shadows of the Law of the temple and High priest represent how [relationship] also happens in Christ

The important part is how the Law is fulfilled
In Christ. The key is that the heart of people must first be made right and then the outward actions will be too..God wants to transform our hearts....through His gift...his gift to us, His son's faithfulness. Jesus lives forever to interceed for us, for those who come to him. Why? so we can learn to totally depend on Him for everything....our hearts are changed to want His will and what He wants for people..and when we intend to act/obey His life is in connections with ours...this love/life will make you want to seek after Him because of the connection we have with Him then creating habits of the Spirit which changes our hearts...therefore when our hearts are right so will the [outward actions]
The outward ritual washing were of the Law but we are cleaned through Christ....another words if you walk in goodness you can't walk in badness at the same time....if you make the heart clean by depending on Christ...then you also uphold the law..
So how is the old covenant in effect it is the course of salvation but not the source...yet I'm not speaking of ceremonial laws...that is Christ's life has fulfilled. Or Civil which fulfilled by His love and changes with government and culture.

Just as a marriages...The first vows may have included washing the man's feet and the consequence of not washing his feet.....He dies you marry another and these vows under a different covenant include washing this new mans feet but no consequences....
So therefore some of the old is still in the new even though they are different covenants...
So No we are not under the old covenant...
But yes the course is still the same in each..
Obedience to GOD BY OBEDIENCE TO THE SON.
Ps
Also recall His word was made flesh..Obeying His son is obeying the living word..

Hebrews 8:13 states:...…….
“In that He says, ‘A new covenant,’ He HAS MADE the first OBSOLETE.”

In the next part of the sentence Paul explains what the word “obsolete” means:
“What is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” But he does not say here that the “old” is BECOMING obsolete — rather, he just said that God “HAS MADE IT” already obsolete.

The Authorized Version translates this as “he hath made the first old.”

W.E. Vine explains that the Greek word for “old,” i.e. palaioo, means, “shall be made old” or “worn out” and may have the meaning of “to abrogate.”

It doesn't actually say covenant there. (it's an interpretation/interpolation by the translator in the English) I think the context comes from the later verses and the verses before he quotes Jer 31 (there were no chapter divisions originally) so I think it is talking about the temple and the priestly system (of the old covenant) which was about to be destroyed:
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+8:5-9:1&version=YLT

Interestingly the word used at the end of Hebrews 8:13 is used to describe the desolation of cities and lands: https://studybible.info/search-interlinear/strongs/854/start/30

However, interestingly enough the temple will be back in Ezekiel 44-48
