  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

An important point that I mentioned in the OP, that others also touched upon, is that we are losing skills merely for expedience.

Written note taking has been shown to aid memorisation and understanding far more than typing. Typing has distinct advantages for legibility and ease of formatting and erasure. It is not however inherently better, it depends what you are trying to achieve. For schooling, typing is therefore a bit counterproductive if you wish to have students understand their subject matter, and without cursive, handwritten notes can be more laborious.
So why not teach children the skill?

It is this mistaken idolisation of technology that leads us down this path. People are losing abilities and they are simply not being taught the next generation. As I said before, this is noticeable in Medicine with newfangled gadgets, where diagnosing from clinical signs often take a backseat to special investigations. This is deeply flawed, in my opinion.

I don't expect it to change, for that is the direction we are heading. I am merely saddened by the erosion of our abilities, and the sheer short-sightedness.
