Hawking has attempted something that is very very difficult. He is attempting to go BEYOND our natural abilities to perceive the un-perceivable.
To re-state:
Just b/c Hawking is attempting to explain several different types of infinities in terms of our limited minds and mathematical models... does not mean he's not on the right track.
It is neither blind, nor an act of faith, merely the best model of reality we can quantify, using mathematical skills. To attempt to explain it in common english is not possible.
We can't even SEE this description that Hawking is trying to "draw" for us. It doesn't exist within normal physical limitations.
That does not mean he is wrong.
He is merely, lending credence to what we already know.
To describe the unseeable is very difficult.
But, that does not mean he is pulling it "Out of his butt" any more than any other philosopher who slaps a label on infinity and calls it "God".
