Mas sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo.
A educated guess, yes, people can make guesses.
Does this apply to things like the existence of a deity?

Hap do you understand how a thought experiment works?
Does this apply to things like the existence of a deity?
Christianity does a fine job of giving itself a black eye on it's own, without help from anything else. There is a LOT of off thread banter going on, but the thread:
Is some of the anti science movement to be blamed on scientists?
Is not a complex question.
Yes, be it bad press and misunderstandings, or more what I see, where scientists are blamed, assumptions being pushed off as facts, and the existence of people with twisted motivations to try and manipulate science to compare to Christianity. People set on painting Christianity in a dark light, always being critical in subtle and not so subtle ways, and in the end, the use of fallacious conversation, be it insulting people who believe in Jesus Christ, to never offering a counter point of view, simply attacking Christianity, to simply lying.
I believe in my heart, and history has shown, that whenever Christianity has questioned itself, a GREAT Revival followed. I am looking forward to something that will be new and unique to this generation, but will have similarities to 'The Great Awakening'.

Any deity will do.
So, by your own admission, you choose to have 'faith' in something that cannot be quantified?Well lets compare.
Say you searched for Zeus.
Zeus is to live on Mt Olympus. So one would use an educated guess to decide if Mt Olympus existed on Earth. That would be your start on 'locating' Zeus, and obviously location would go a long way in discovering if Zeus really exists or not.
But take The Christian God of the Bible. This God in Genesis 1:1 created time, space, and matter. So, to point out the obvious, this God exists outside of time, space, and matter, SO to look for this God 'inside' of time, space, and matter, would be like looking into your drink glass, and looking for the person who made the drink glass. SO, one must question, how does one get to know this God? The scripture says 'by Faith'.
So, one would have to have Faith, which, of course, is irrational and totally un-Methodological Naturalistic, so, you will never find this God by your own method.

Non-belief is the fastest growing 'belief,' far outpacing the growth of any other religion. Fortunately, as information becomes so accessible to the 'common' person, I 'believe in my heart, and history has shown,' that reason will triumph over superstition and unfounded, defenseless theological claims.

So, by your own recount, the claim that a deity exists is a mere guess. At least we're on the same page, now.
No, it can be a guess on some and not on others.
Some a guess is impossible and only experience at the "God's word' can it truly be known.
Are you aware of the logical fallacy known as Special Pleading?
Did you know you can only have a correct guess if you have a conclusion?Hey, did you know you can have incorrect guesses and correct guesses?![]()
