Is "secular" music ok to listen to?

There's nothing wrong with 'secular' music. Just as there's nothing wrong with a 'secular' chair or 'secular' hamburger. To delineate between the two and then condemn that which represents the common, you've constructed a false dichotomy that borders on the Gnostic heresy. God created one world, not two. Not to mention that many of the arguments against are not based on Scripturally-sound or even logically-sound premises.

And besides, why would this entire Secular Music section be here otherwise?

This was always one of my struggles because in the church I grew up in secular music was "frowned upon". Just like with everything I think it's up to u and God, me personally found that it was a matter of balance, I'm sure eating a piece of chocolate cake isn't bad but if u find that uve downed the whole thing then u may wanna work on ure balance. Secular music is kinda the same some u can enjoy but only n healthy portions.

Well, you really can't listen to too much music unless it's like satanic. Why do you need to balance it? It's just music. Listening to "too much" isn't really going to do you harm unless you actually let it influence your thinking or choices. It isn't going to secretly "corrupt" you or "destroy your soul". It's just music. Listen to as much as you want, it's not like unhealthy food or drugs. Just please be smart and don't take any of the lyrics seriously as a "philosophy on life". Just because li'l Wayne is talking about doing ecstasy and is having a good time doesn't mean you should try it, we have enough idiots in the world who take it too seriously.

All those bands you listed are fine, and I see you have good tastes as you listed Led Zeppelin. You are fine until you start taking the lyrics to heart. Don't be one of those people that some others bring up whenever they make the arguement that "all secular music is the devil's work". We already hear it enough.

Da my fellow Comrade, secular is an inaccurate term that is overrated, especially here in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with music. Music is a lyrical expression of just about anything. So if you want to condemn expression, might as well condemn yourself whenever you want to show emotion.

See this is just one more reason I am so happy I'm not a Christian. I never have to wonder or worry about 'issues' like these. If a band sounds good, I'll just listen to it. If a book seems interesting, I'll just read it. If a movie looks appealing, I'll just watch it.

You should be able to do whatever you want to do regardless of your faith.

I recently started listening to Celtic Music, or music based on music from the Celtic regions of the British Isles. It is considered 'world music' to some. I listen to mostly instrumental tracks, mainly because I don't understand Gaelic- LOL. But anyway, I don't feel my salvation is jeopardized because I listen to this music. I like it, and it does not come against The Lord. Some might say it is still secular music, but you know what? God gave us a brain, and an inner witness, to tell us better if a piece of music is not the way to go. Just sayin'.....

This is a lot like why dieting fails. You restrict and things are off limits and that makes you want them even more. If nothing is off limits, you will (or should) naturally moderate yourself to what is beneficial to you, not what someone in a robe is mandating you do. You have a brain, put it to good use! :)

Even when I was a strong believer, a gnostic believer at that, I still listened to Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, etc. Some Christians had said that I shouldn't listen to secular music. I was once told by a Buddhist that "god appreciates any kind of music". I would imagine that a being with the capacity for total knowledge and understanding would be able to see the beauty and artistry behind any form of entertainment.

Please never think you should not be a Christian, just for loving secular music. There will always be those who disgaree, those who prefer Christian music. This is because we are all so very different.

There are a great many Christians who love secular music as you have already read on your thread; I am one of them.

Music is so emotive. I adore Arabic music, whereas someone else, some totally different genre. But do begin looking into the Scriptures because the Christian life is so full of joy. And music, too. :)

As others have already made great points in defense of secular music, I'll only add one thing: I think that if God wanted us to listen to music that had spiritual themes exclusively, he would have made Christian music a lot better.
