Secular music is generally fine, but not universally. The same goes for so-called Christian music. We have some freedom about this.

Is it bad if I listen to secular music with swear words in it?

Yes.

Do you think God would be ok with me making music with horror-like lyrics?

If it glorifies God, then yes, 1 Corinthians 10:

31 Whether you eat therefore or drink, or if you do anything, you shall do everything for the glory of God.
Where do we draw the line?

Let the Holy Spirit guide you by his peace and joy in your conscience.

Some secular music is bad, such as the music mentioned in this post here. However, if the lyrics are clean, and the music videos are not demonic or worldly, then we should be okay. That is why I prefer smaller musicians typically over the commercialized music of today.

I would have to counter with the question, does something being labeled "Christian" make it good?

Not all secular music is bad.

For instance, this song is good, is danceable, and is clean. And yes, someone added Avatar (2009) to the video. I danced to the remix a lot in 2022 in my room.

I went to my sisters house when MTV first came out. Her son in law who was a choir boy in the church was watching or listing to that music. I told him that he should not listen to that because it would or could rot his brain out. He laughed and thought it was funny. I thought it best not to say anything and let him think it was a joke. He want on to get a degree in business administration and seemed to have a nice future for himself. Then I heard that he died from brain cancer in his early 30's. So we do have to be careful what we say to people.

People use to think Rock and Roll was the devils music. Music has time and a beat and there is no time in Heaven.
So they say music is different there. Or maybe time is different there than it is here.

We will find out when we get to heaven.

"All good music isn't Christian
All Christian music isn't good "

That's not my original saying, but it sums it up for me
Reminds me of this one:

"..can't you see you're not making Christianity better, your just making rock and roll worse."

Secular music can also carry a positive message and some even mention things like faith, God, conscience, etc.

For example, one of Prince's most famous songs was "I would die for you." The entire song is about Jesus and his sacrifice. Here are a few lyrics:

You're just a sinner, I am told
Be your fire when you're cold
Make you happy when you're sad
Make you good when you are bad
I'm not a human
I am a dove
I'm your conscious
I am love
All I really need is to know that you believe

This is a secular song that is all about Jesus

It's just that one must be careful what they expose themselves to. A lot of secular music is about sex, greed, gluttony, and riches. There is so much out there that it's hard to know what to avoid sometimes.

Yes, that does sum it up. Amy Grant is a good example. In the beginning her music was amazing. People were so disappointed that she went secular. But that does not mean her secular music is no good.

I am amazed that Don Moan continues to put out amazing worship music after all these years.

It is as if country music has become popular music with a bit more religion mixed in. But Taylor Swift with her somebody did somebody wrong music seems to lead the charts. She is the first person to make a billion dollars off of one tour. But it is very nice that she gave her people a $100,000 bonus. I was in theater in College and they do not always have the respect they should for the people working back stage. It take 100 people back stage to support the one person in the lime light. Of course they have to trust them with their life. Pink has to hire people who just check up on the people who do the rigging to make sure it is done right and they did not make any mistakes. Cher had problems with the rigging in Cleveland and they had to call 911 to rescue her. Sorry I drift from subject to subject like that. I know this has nothing to do with that.

Yes. I can take about 30 minutes of klove, or any other ccm station. I do like some southern gospel, but I get burnt out pretty quick, on the Gaither channel on Sirius XM

On the secular side; in my younger days, I was a big prog rock fan (RUSH, Jethro tull, etc) and many of those songs have deep lyrics -their song: The Temples of Syrinx from RUSH's 2112 album, reminds me of the times we're in today.

Alan Jackson also has some great meaningful songs ("Remember When" to name one, as well as Waylon.
