  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It can be - like anything else that is not done in moderation. Moderation is a fruit of the Spirit. Moderation means not letting any behavior get out of control, and into that harmful space. It also means not being dogmatic about unimportant issues.

IOW, "Do what thou wilt" is the whole of the law.

Negative. IOW Do what God wills, and let no earthly passion rule you.

"Do what thou wilt" is a quote quite litteraly, directly from Satanism (or Anton LaVey's version of it). It is one of the most basic "theological" tenets of Satanism. Needless to say, if you're a Christian I suggest that you don't follow this piece of advice.

Paul-martin, playing poker isn't wrong. Playing poker for money isn't forbidden in the Bible either.

Guidelines:
If you feel the need to justify playing poker for money, don't do it. This means that in your heart you actuially do consider it wrong. If you are willing to do something you consider wrong, your heart is in the exact same attitude as when you are doing something wrong. This attitude in and of itself is sinful, even if what you are doing may not be (neccesarily sinful).
"...for whatsoever is not of faith is sin." Romans 14:9-23 speaks on this. Remember that these verses aren't speaking about only what may be forbidden by God, but also how it's viewed by man.

If it causes a weaker brother to stumble, don't do it. (also mentioned in the previous verses)

If you feel the need to win a big cash pot, don't do it. (You'll be on your way to addiction)

If you would like to win a big cash pot, and you don't mind losing $5 or $10, by all means feel free to play. Realize, however, that as a Christian, you shouldn't be using money that should be used for something else (being a good steward). (hint: If you don't tithe now, do that first. If you need food money, rent, you have a friend in need, give or pay that first. Play poker after.)

Paul-Martin it sounds like you might possibly be needing some good advice. I'd advise that besides all of what I wrote previously, you might want to find a good church (Christian), and read the Bible to know what it really says so that they don't take you- either monitarily or morally (not all so called "Christian" churches are good). And last but never least, pray for God's guidance in the matter.

I'll pray for you too. (We all need it).

Thank you for an good reply, with some fine point of views. Then you advice me to read the bible, tryed that, i start with matt, but i think to much, reading it made me think how shall i be accepted (just made depressed so i stoped).

O about the poker i do belive it is wrong because i feel that you may earn money on people who can't handel it, but i aren't sure, i will think on it.

And thank you for praying for me!

Not inherently. Playing without money is probably always fine. Playing with money is fine when one doesn't endanger the financial well-being of oneself or others.

Playing poker is fun. It is not a problem as long as it does not cause a financial hardship. A low house limit per night of play, say twenty dollars for students, will prevent a problem and provide excitement. When you lose your 20 you are unable to play anymore. It is a good way to learn strategy and to learn more about how you friends think.

Oh then how exactly does

1 Corinthians 10:23 “Everything is permissible”

mean "do what God wills" ?

unless you are referring to this

1 Cor 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

which was not the verse in question

That is hard to know if you play online or in a casino.

Also bill i agree that poker in the long run is about skill, it is extremly advanced if you want to be one of the best, it is much much more then math.
